Description

Jan.r 3, 1928. 1,655,301 f E. B. WILLIAMS HANGER OR SINGLETREE Filed 111.12.14. 1926 Patented Jan. 3, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT 'ol-Fica EDWARD BEST WILLIAMS, OF CORNELIA, GEORGIA, `ASSIG'rNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THERESA LOU RAMEY, OF CORNELIA, GEORGIA.
HANGER on einem:frana.
Application filed .August 14, 1926. Serial No. 129,244.
This invention relates to devicesdesigned -to be used as singletrees, asa hanger for supporting hogs vwhen hogs are killed, or as a wagon tongue neck yoke.
The general object of theinvention is to provide a device of this nature having a body formed withhooks at its ends and to provide hook closing levers pivotally mount ed upon the body, and means whereby the the hooks when strain is applied to the body or to the levers. Y
A further object is to provide a devicer of this character which is so constructed that any elements engaged with the hooks will be held from accidental removal from the hooks by strain applied to the body.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character whose principle may be applied to singletrees, to lneck yokes, or to'butchers gambrels.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of my device when used as a singletree;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but partially in section as indicated, and'showing the hooks open.
Fig. 3 i's a top plan view of a wagon tongue with my device applied thereto;
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of my` device when used as a wagon neck yoke.
Referring to these drawings lOvdesignates a body which is relatively elongated and is `relatively narrow and is cut out at its ends to provide two hook portions 11. Pivoted'to the body are the levers 12 which embracevthe body and have the outer end portions thereof disposed within the hooks 11. To the inner ends of these levers 12 are connected the two upwardly converging pairs of links 13 which are pivoted at 14 to the lower ends i ofthe levers 12 and are at their other ends connected by the pivot bolt 15. A supporting ring or shackle 16 is engaged by this'pivot bolt.
Assuming that the ring 16 isengaged ywith a support and'objects be hung upon the hooks 11, then the weight of these objects on the body will cause the body to move i downward relative to the links 13 and this will pullrupward on the inner ends of the levers 12. causing `the outer ends of the hook closing levers may be pulled to closel levers to move downward against the Yextremities of the hooks 11,k thus closing the gap of the hooks and locking any object to A in which case the ring 16 will be supported from a suitable overhead structure and the hogs may be hung up by chains to the hooks 11. It may also be used as a wagon neck yoke as illustrated in vFigure 4. In this case, the ring 16 will be slipped over the end of the wagon tongue and the straps 17 will engage with the hooks 11. In any case the strain upon the body and links will cause f the hooks. Upon a release of thisV strain, Y
'zor
the levers to `close and thus lock the object Y within the hooks 11 and there will be no danger of this object, as for instance a ring,
or the end ofl a draft chain, coming loose It will be obvious that vthis device is capable Vof many applications on a farm ork under other circumstances.
A tree structure comprising a bar provided in the vicinity of lits ends and at the same side edge with recesses formingv hooks, the end surfaces of the said hooks being located between the planes of the longitudinal edges of the bar, lever members pivoted atthe side 0f the vbar and adapted to bridge the recesses and having end portions engage able with theends of the hooks, said levers when engaging the hooks lying completely between the planes of the longitudinal edges of the bar, link members pivotally connected with the inner endsof the levers, the combined lengths of the link Vmembers being greater thanthe distance between the inner ends of the levers whenV said levers arein engagement with the'hooks and said link members having'their innerends pivotally connected together.
Intestimony whereof Ihereunto afiix my signature.
