I CARTRIDGE.
Application filed January e, 1826. Serial No. vases.
,(enmr nn man man ACT or mass 3, 1883; 22 srar. 1.. 625.)
The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its ofliof maneuver be reduced to a minimum.
the hub of a bevel gear wheel 9 adapted to be rotated by the pinion 10 of an actuating mechanism 11, either manually or automatically 7 driven and which it is understood displaces Accordingly, I have shown in a prior patent,
No. 1,555,061 of Sept. 29, 1925, apparatus for setting a fuse after the round is placed within the gun.
apparatus due regard must be given to the operation of the breech block, the rapid loading of the round, the ejectionof the empty case, the effect on the case of the propellant In designing a cartridge for use with such I One very efl'ective form 0 this is to provide a ring 17 in the rear face charge and also the transportation, of theround. The apparatus should also be independent .of the breech block to permit the actuating mechanism to be coupled to a fire .control system by which the equivalent of fuse range is automatically and continuously introduced into the device. To these and other ends, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements, described hereinafter and ointed out in the claims forming a part of t is specification. A practical embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a longitudinal sectional view through the breech end of a gun with my imfigoved cartridge loaded in the chamber. ferring to the drawing by numerals of reference: The-cartridge is substantially of the stand ard type and comprises a projectile 5 disposed v1n the usual manner in the forward end ofa cartridge case 6. The projectile is equipped with a ase timefuse 7 of any suitable type which includes a rotatable positioning element. The base of the cartridge case is formed with a socket 8.for receiving the pinion 10, angular amounts correspondmg to values of fuse range. A rod 12 ex- .tendin -axially of the case is fixed to the gear w eel 9 and has its forward end loosely keyed in the positioning element of the fuse so that the rotation of the gear wheel may be imparted through the rod to set the fuse.
For the pur ose of igniting the propellant charge 13 in t e cartrldge case a'percussion primer 14 is carried by the gear wheel, the flame from the primer being conducted through a passage 15 and vent holes 16 in the rear end of the rod.
In order to facilitate rotation of the gear wheel 9 the area of contact f the wheel and breech block may-be reduce to a minimum. accomplishing of the wheel, which ring also serves to ob turate the gases on discharge.
While the application of the invention is shown in connection with a base time fuse it is pointed out that a nose fuse may equally well be employed, the rod 12 extending through the projectile or imparting its movement to a second rod secured to the positioning element of the fuse and forming a part of the projectile.
I claim:
1. A cartridge embod ing a fused projectile, a cartridge case avmg an external .socket in its base, a bevel gear wheel formed with' a hub disposed in the socket, a primer carried by the gear wheel, a rod fixed to the wheel and extending axially of the case for connection with the fuse of the projectile, and said rod provided with passages to permit the flame from the primer to ignite the propellant charge in the case.
2. A cartridge embodying a fused projectile, a cartrldge case, a gear wheel rotatably mounted in the base of the case, a
primer carried by the gear wheel and a rod fixed .to the wheel and detachably connected with the fuse of the projectile.
