engage within a transverse slot 0 in the key 0 the rotatable part 0 being maintained in the locked position by means of a leaf spring 0 mounted upon the box cylinder 0 and adapted to engage with a fiat surface 0 provided on the cam 0 referred to; A spring catch is similarly provided for the box cylinder b. By this means the box 7 cylinders b and 0 may be drawn to the side safely away from the other rotating parts fort-he purpose of changing boxes. It will then be seen that by rotating the handle 6 through, say, a third of a revolution, the slidingframes e will be caused to move either upwards or downwards in the fixed frames f, carrying with them the box cylinder shafts b and 0 thus bringing either of the box cylinders b and 0 into, or out of, contact with both the impression cylinder a and the inking rollers d and (P. On the end of the box cylinder shafts b and c a clutch mechanism is mounted one of which is shown in. Figure 3. This clutch mechanism is the same on both shafts.
As shown in Figure 25 the box cylinder shaft 0 is mounted in an eccentric bearing 0 on the end of which the gear a is free to revolve, the gear 0 beingalways in mesh with the gear a on the end of the impression cylinder shaft a (as shown in Figures 1 and 2). The gear 0 is provided with conical clutch face 0 and the ball thrust washer 0 is provided to take the thrust of the clutch between the gear 0 and the bearing 0 On the shaft 0 and free to slide on the 'key 0 is mounted the male portion of the 'mountedon the boss of the clutch c is a disc 0 carrying a pin 0 and also provided with an annular groove c" cut in the periphery of its boss. The disc 0 is free to move laterally along the boss of the clutch a and the pin 0 slides through a hole in the face of the clutch c and is free to engage with the hole 0 in the face of the clutch gear 0 when it comes opposite to it. From this it will be seen that if the clutch c be withdrawn from the clutch gear 0 that the clutch gear 0 will continue to revolve completely out of contact with any part of the shaft 0 or any part carried the shaft 0 and the shaft 0 will come to rest. It will also be seen that if the pin 0 be inserted in the hole 0 that the gear 0 and the shaft 0 will always be in the same relative position to each other.
Figures 6 and 6 are detail views of the clutch gear 0 on the inner face of which is cut a concentric groove 0 having the same radius from the centre of the shaft 0 as the pin 0 and having a width the same or slightly greater than the diameter of the pin 0 The groove 0 starts at the point X having no depth but; progresses evenly in the form of a. spiral until it reaches a depth of, say where it runs into the hole 0.
Carried in hearings in the fixed frames f are the two clutch actuating ram shafts g and g of which the upper one y is shown in Figures 4 and 5. 'lhese cam shafts are respectively provided the same for both the box cylinder shafts Q0 and v and description of one only is given.
In Figure 5 in which the clutch c and the pin 0 are in the disengageil position, 9 is the cam shaft, bearing on its end the cams and g which actuate the levers g and g by means of the pins, or runners, and 9' running on their cam faces. The other end of the levers g and g are provided with forks carrying the runners, or pads, 7 and g" which engage with the annular grooves 0 and c of the clutch c and the pin carrying disc 0 respectively. It will be seen in Figure 5 that the pin, or runner g is held against the cum 1 by the pressure of the spring 9 except when the male clutch c is up to its work. It will further be seen that: if the cam g be rotated, the cam face is capable of witlnlrawing or letting in the male clutch c. and thus disengaging, or engaging it with the clutch gear 0 The cam is provided with a raised part g by which the clutch 0" may be inomentarily withdrawn to permit the pin a to travel round the groove c into the hole 0 Thus it will he understood that the shape of the cam g is such that the clutch c is gradually engaged with the clutch 0 while the cam is rotated through somewhat less than half revolution whereupon the runner g engages with the outwardly inclined surface of the raised part whereby on the cam having completed a half revolution the clutch c" in disengaged from the clutch 0. As the cam is further rotated and the runner engages w ith the inwardly inclined surface of the raised part of the cam the clutch c is once more engaged with the clutch c and remuiin: engaged therewith dur ng the remainder of the rotation of the cam The spring y acting on the lever g keeps the pin, or runner up against the face A of the cam g and tends to more the pin carrying disc 0 towards the mal clutch c and the clutch gear 0, and it will be seen that if the cam 5 is rotated, the pin carrying disc 0 will move towards the male rlufch 1:" and will carry the pin 0 forward until it is stopped by the inner face of the clutch gear 0. The cam face B of the cam g" is lio so formed that it does not act upon the runner 9 until the rotation of the cam shaft 7- is nearing con'ipletion so that the runner g is not positively actuated by the cam face l3 until the pin is in engagenient with the hole 0 (hi the other end oi the shaft g" as shown in Figures 4-, at and i are two cams h and li These cams are both mounted on the one shaft as shown in the plan, but although they are shown separately in front elevation for the sake of simplicity, it will be understood that they lunction together and simultaneously. The parts in Figure t are shown in the Josition in which the brake has just been released at the beginning of it in the cam [t and the brake shoe It is thus pressed into contact with the hand Wheel it by the spring a but in the rotalion oi? the cam sha'lt in a (ilOCilUV M-ELllr roction the runner it is moved inwardly by the cam against the face of which it is pressed. The brake shoe it may be released by hand pressure on the handle It" when desired. The cam 72, (mounted upon the same sharl t) when rotated actuates the bar 1 2 by means or the pin or runner it" and withdraws the end of the bar it, which is sup ported by the groove 71/ in the lined frame 7, from the slot it in the sliding block 6.
It will thus be seen that when the bar it is withdrawnaud the slot a is not in line with it owing to the sliding block 0 being in the lower position it is not possible to rolalio the cam shaft carrying the cams hand 71? and the clutch actuating cams g, g until the sliding block 6 is in its correct position.
The operation is as follower-Let it be assumed that the press is running and the boxes on the lower box cylinder Z) are running in contact with the impression cylinder a and the inl: roller (Z the upper box cylindcr and shaft 0 and c are stationary and the box cylinder 0 drawn to the side along the key (1 shown in Figure 1*. A box is inserted in the box cylinder 0 and the cylinder pushed along the shaft 0 and the key c against the stopc which determines its correct lateral POSl'lLlOI]. The cam shait is then rotated (m'eilerably tl'irough reduc tion gear not shown, or it may be mechanically operated from the macl'iiine). The brake shoe Ft is .lirst released by the action of the cam 71,2 and the cam 7 then allows the male clutch c to engage slowly with. the clutch gear 0 and at the same time the cam 9 allows the pin carrying disc 0 to travel forward the same distance with the male clutch c". As soon as engagement in ellcctcd between the male clutch c and the clutch gear c the can] y lurther releases the pin carrying disc c which carired l'orwarlil by the pressure of the spring 5 andthis presses the pin 0 against the concentric spiral groove 0 in the face of the clutch gear 0 at wliatcver point is happens to he opposite to. The com g then withdraws the male clutch c momentarily and allo the clutch gear c to overtake the box cyl inder shaft with the result that the pin 0 will travel around the concentric spiral groove 0 until it reaches the hole 0" when it lillliQF-JUP the drive. The pin c then pushed into the hole c by the action of the cam face 13 on the am and the rain again allows the male clutch c" to engage with the clutch gear 0. hen the pin 6 and the clutrh c are home the cam it with draws the bar 72" from the slot it thus leaving the sliding blocl: c Free to be moved. The box cylinder u now running at correct speed and in register with the impression cylinder a, the handle c is moved through, say, a third oil? a revolution. This causes the eccentric i-rlia'lt c to rotate in the slots c (llIgure id) and will move the sliding blocks (lmvnn'ards until they come to rest agaimt the stops c. This operation is assistcd and the final position sustained by the spring a acting on the crank c". The bones on the box cylinder 0 will now be in contact with the .in'ipresaion cylinder a and the inking roller (1 and the boxes on the box cylinder Z will be out 0] contact with. the impression cylinder at and the inking roller (P. The box cylinder shalt b can how be broughtto rest by rotatim); the cam shalt g in the opposite direction when. the se quence of operations as outlined above on cam shalt 9 will be :revcrsedi The box cylinder L may then be drawn to the side and the box or boxes removed and it is left in this position ready for the insertion of any future boxes that might be required.
In. Figure l the box cylinder sha'lt c is shown in its working position in which position the boxes are running in contact with the innpression cylinder and billing roller, and it will be seen that it is not possible to rotate the cam shalt g owing to the end of the bar it not being in alignment with the slot it in the sliding blocli c, therefore it not possible to actuate the clutch mechanism on the end ot box cylinder sha'lt c and so bring the shatt to rest while it rcmains in contact with the impression cyliir der and the inking roller. ll the sliding block 0 is moved upwards and ln'onght to rest against the stops (Figure 2) then I the slot h comes into alignment with the bar it and the cam shaft 9 can then be rotated, and the clutch mechanism on the end of the box cylinder shaft 0 actuated rest, the bar h will be projected by the cam it into the slot It in the sliding block e-andthe sliding block 6 is locked in this position until the cam shaft g is again rotated to bring the box cylinder shaft 0 into motion. This means it is impossible to move the box cylinder 0 into contact with the impression cylinder a and the inking roller d until the box cylinder shaft 0 is running at its proper speed and is in register. It. must be understood that all the mechanism'in connection 'with the box cylinder shaft 0 and the cam shaft 9 described above is exactly duplicated on the box cylindershaft b and the cam shaft 9.
It will thus be understood that it is impossible to bring any printin surfaces into contact unless they are running at the correct speed and in register, and that it is impossible to disconnect the mechanism driving the printing surfaces while they are in contact. i
It will furthermore be understood that the handle it on the brake lever h (Figure at) is provided to enable the box cylinder shaft to be moved by hand after it has come to rest, so as to turn the box cylinder into the most convenient position for the replacing of boxes.
It Will be understood that the invention isnot limited to the actual construction or to the combination of the features of the construction hereinbefore described-as the operations described may bGCttl'llGCl out in constructions considerably different without departing from the invention.
