PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS F, WHAR'ION, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SASH ANTIRATTLER.
Application filed December 6, 1926. Serial No. 152,869.
small and extremely light device capable of being used in connection with any door or sash.
The manner of operation of the device is to place the spring member in a crack between the sash, or between a sash and a win dow jam, or between the door and door jam and then place the spring apart far enough to hold the sash or door tightly in a given position.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout the several figures of the drawings and of which there may be modifications.
' Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window frame with two slidable sash therein, showing one of these sash fasteners applied to the windows to hold them in place, the device also serving to prevent the unauthorized opening of the windows more than they are now shown, 1
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of the device with the handle down to expand the Spring,
Figure 3 is an edge elevation of the device with the operating handle up and released from the spring,
Figure at is a front elevation of the device with the handle up. v
The numeral 1 indicates the window frame, 2 the upper slidable sash, 3 the forward slidable sash, and the f this anti-rat tler applied to both sash to hold them in a fixed position. The anti-rattler consists of, the members 4 and 5 made of fiat clock spring bent over upon themselves as indi cated at 6. At the top of the member 5 the bail 7 is pivotally mounted, the bail is shaped at 8 and 9 to engage the bent portion, or bent corners 10 and 11 of the outside member 4, the object being to spring the two members 4 and 5 apart from each other about one half an inch, thereby providing means whereby one sash is tightened with the aid of the other against the window frame. Similarly the tightening device may be forced into an opening between a door and its jam, thereupon the handle is manipulated to hold the door tightly in a given position.
E, If more security is desired two of the devices may be used on each window, but ordinarily one is sufficient for all purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows, but modifications may be made in carrying out the invention as shown in the drawing and in the above particularly described form thereof, within the purview of the annexed claims:
1. In an anti-rattler for sashes the combination with a flat spring bent fiat upon itself at one end, of a wire bail pivoted at its end to one of the free ends of the spring to bear upon the inside of the other end to spread the two members thereof.
2. An anti-rattler for sashes comprising a flat spring bent upon itself to produce a longer and a shorter member, the longer member having a raised portion whereby a cam surface is produced, a bail pivotally connected to the shorter member and having inwardly extending portions adapted to bear upon the cam surfaces of the longer member whereby the two members may be separated at one end to look a pair of sashes in a given position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29 day of Nov., A. D. 1926.
THOMAS F. WHARTON.
