y *Thisy invention relates to an' adjustable hoop device and pertains particularly toa hoop designed primarily to be used in pairs forsecuring together articles of cloth ina bag-like manner to set up a strainer or strainer-bag, or for securing the cloth tight for the purpose of doing needlework thereon. The device can ,also be used singly V for supporting hot plates, irons or other devices" which are to be kept raised from the supporting surface. i n
..- llhe primary object of this invention is the provision, in a manner as hereinafter `set forth, of an adjustable hoop which can be easily and quickly increased or decreased ,inV
size as desired, and securedin the adjusted position." Y
The invention contemplates the provision 0f a band of spiing steel bent upon itself to form Va hoop, with tlie ends thereof overlapping, one end having secuied thereto and surrounding the adjacent partof the band, a closed ring or collar, while the other end carries a similar closed band which Vsurrounds tlie contacting portion of the hoop, this closed band being provided with a set screw which can be shifted to secure the band body and its contacting end portion to-v gether to maintain the looped band at the desired size.
Further objects and advantagesof the in- Y lvention will become apparent as the description proceeds, the description referringI to the accompanying drawing which forms` a part of this specification, but it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed and modilied so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the vdrawing f Figure l shows a pair of the hoops einbodying this invention, in nested relation, the same being in plan view. A
Figure 2 is a view taken transversely of the nested hoops 4shown in Figure l, showing the manner in which a cloth bag can be secured therebetween. A
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken upon the line 3-3 of Figure l. 4
Figure 4 is a transverse section taken upon the line 4-T4 of Figure 1 and, v
Figure 5 is a section taken upon the line 15A-5 of Figure 4.-.
Referring new to the ifaviginj defa'iif wherein likenumerals of reference indicate parts throughout thegseveral corresponding views, the :numerals l indicate generallya QFFI'CLE. A. y
relatively longl band of spring steel.'y .Each
of these bands is formed into a-loop, having the rends 2 in overlappingrelation in the manner shown. Y i Y,
@ne of the' ends of'each loopvis surrounded by a flat band 3, throughwhich band the adjacent lor contacting t portion of the loop band bodyl passes.
The other, end of eachfloop lband, is siir-v l rounded byfand has securedtheretoa flat Vclamp band 4, and .through this Vclamp band theadjacent portion'of theloopedband body .if
passes. ,y ,Y .t f v The clamp band 4 of certain ofthe hoops is provided upon its inner'side with the inwardly extending collar 5, through which collar and tlie ,adjacent side of the clamp `band' 4, a threaded passage-is formed.
Threaded into the collar 5 from the inside of the loop is tlieset screw 6 having thefinger flange 7 aboutthe headrthereof so that the screw can-be threaded inwardly by hand. lt is, of course, understood and-apparent fiomwthe showing of Figures 4 and 5 of the; drawing 'that the fixed end2 of this hoop, which has the clamp screw 6 upon the in side, is fixedto the opposite sideof the clamp loop from that through which the set screw 6 extends, thus the body of the loop l'slides through the clamp loop 4 between the end of.
the set screw 6 andthe end 2 of the hoop.
Certain of the other `hoops have the clamp loop 4 xed thereto'gin reversed condition, as
is shown inFigure 1.- In this type the securiiigscrews 6 and threaded collar 5v are upon the outside of the clamp loop in the manner as shown.l It will be readily apparent from this description, as well as from thefshowingl inthe drawing, that this manner of constructing certain ofthe hoops with the securing screws upon thel inside and others with the securing screw uponthe outside, is to permit the nesting of the hoops in the manner shown so that a piece of cloth l may be secured between the nested hoops', as indicated :at 8in Figures 2 to 5 inclusive.
From the .foregoing description it will ions, r
also be readily seen that the size of the hoopsv can be varied as desired, by simply loosening the screws 6 and sliding the loops 3 and 4k toward or away from one another thus'increasing lor, decreasing Ithefoverlap of the ends Zand-consequently varyingthesize of the hoops@ A An adjustable hoop 'of the character de- Y. scribed is adaptablevrior.,many uses,-vvhen used in pairs eacHpairc'an`1beinalde to hold' a cloth bag as indicated in `FigurejZ: for;4
