Each of these sprin -devices comprises a cylinder 16, ivote at 17 to a racket 18 on the insi e of the body-portion of the casing; and also consists of a rodor plunger 19, ivoted at 20 to a bracket 21 out e inside 0 the cover-portion of the casing. The rod or plunger .19 of each of the spring-devices carries a piston 2 between which piston and the end wall 3 of the cylinder'16, in which the piston operates, is a slpring 26 which assists, as aforet e cover-opening operation. It will be understood that tie positions of the pivots of the spring cover-opening devices, and the tension of the springs therein, and the proportions of the parts, are all designed so that accidental opening of the cover, under the action of the springs, will not occur, and so that the s rings will not offer undue resistance to tie closing of the cover. For example, when the cover is closed, as shown in Figure 1, the piston 22 is in such position that the spring 26 is at its greatest compression, ready to act with effectiveness as soon as the cover is partly lifted. On the contrary, when the cover is fully open, the s ring 26 is relaxed and therefore offers litt e resistance to the closing of the cover until the cover has reached such position that the weight thereof will effectively assist in the closing operation in compensation for the increasing resistance offered by the spring.

The rear end of the lever 33 has a pin-and-slot pivotal connection at 34, to one arm 35 of a bell-crank lever, pivoted at 36 to a bracket 37 on the rear outside wall of the bodyportion ofthe casing. The other arm 38 of this bell-crank lever is pivoted at 39 to an arm 40, the other end of which arm. 40 is pivoted at 4:1 to a bracket 42 on the rear of the cover-portion of the casing. Depression of the palm-piece34, from full to dotted line, Figure 1, position, causes the bellcrank lever 3538 to be rocked back, drawing down the arm 40 and initiating or carrying through the movement of the cover from the full to the dotted line position thereof shown in Figure 1.
Once the opening of the cover has been of the plungers 19 are lifted to such position that a leverage is obtained whereby the springs 26 may be effective in the coveropening operation. When it is desired to close the cover, the alm-piece 34 may be lifted, thus causing t e arms 38 and 40 to act, in effect, as atoggle, in creating an upward pressure to lift the cover, and as a linkage to swing the cover forward against the resistance of the springs 26.
passes through, and operates in, a suitable slot in the front wall of the casing-body; and a suitable stop 61, in the form of a bent finger at the bottom of the keyboard extension of the typewriter, serves to limit the downward throw of the palm-piece 34. Two strips 62 and 63, of yieldable, resilient, sound-deadening material, such as felt, are secured to the inner, front wall of the casingbody, adjacent the slot 60, and have their free edges normally abutting one another along the central line of the slot; thus closing the slot except where the opposing lips of the lining-strips are held apart by the arm of the lever. Similarly secured to the rear wall of the casing-body, adjacent the slot 65, in which the arm 35 of the bell-crank lever protrudes, are two abutting strips 66 and 67, of yieldable, resilient, sound-deadening material, such as felt, for closing the slot against the emission of sounds generating within the casing.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and ortionsof the improvements ma be used without others.
Having thus escribed my invention, I claim:
1. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, having i1 body-portion including front and rear walls, a cover hinged to the rear wall to swing vertically and normally maintained by gravity in =closed position, the front wall of said body-portion having an opening through which the keyboard of the machine projects and also a vertical slot adjacent the side of said keyboard, a lever pivoted within said bodyortion, one of the arms of the lever exten ing through-said slotto an operative position beside the keyboard, the opposite arm of the lever extending toward the rear wall, a bellcrank mounted on said rear wall, the latter having a vertical slot through which the forward arm of the bell-crankprojects, a'pivotal connection between said bell-crank-arm and said opposite arm of the lever, a link connecting the other arm of the bell-crank to the cover, a cylinder ivoted to the body-portion, a normally inc ective spring and piston within the cylinder associated with said body-portion, and a piston-carrying rod pivoted to the cover, the spring being arranged to expand against the piston, the cylinder, spring and pivots for the cylinder and rod being on a dead center when the cover is in its closed position, said lever effecting an initial raising of the cover and breaking said dead center, the spring becoming effective after the breaking of said dead center to swing the "cover upwardly to fully open position.
