Application iled November 16, 1926. 1 Serial No. 148,635.
This inventionrelates to hardware and particularly to window sash fasteners.
An object of this invention isa simple` and efficient sash fastener vof such aV character that when the windowv is closed, the fastener is automatically operated.
According to the invention, there is provided on one Window sash a spring-impelled rotary fastener lever which engages a keeper on the other window sash to fasten the window. A'slidable detent is provided which has a projecting portion arranged inthe path ofthe operating handle of the latch lever so that rotation of the latch lever from its Y fastening position slides the detent. Means are provided for elevating a portion of the detent when thusslid into the'path of the latch lever to prevent rotation thereof under the influence of its spring, and means are provided for holding` the detent in this position. Associated with a keeper is a trip member which, when the sashes are moved to close the window, releases the detent, thereby allowing the latch lever to rotate under the influence of its spring into fastening relation to the keeper.' -Other objects, novel features-'and advantages of the invention will be apparent 'from thefollvwing specification and accompanying drawings, wherein -Figure 1 is a perspective view of apair o'f window sashes equipped with a fastener embodying the invention, the sashes ybeing in the'position assumed when the window is partly open; f i f Fig. 2 is a similar view 'with the window closed and the fastener in locking position;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4, is a section on they line 1- fl of Fig. 2; v Y
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the latching lever and detent;
Fig. 6 is a bottom View thereof;V and Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5.
10 designates the sash of the lower win- 'doW and 11 designates the sash of the upper window. To the sash 10 is secured a base 12, the central portion of which is recessed as at 13 and provided with lugs 14:. Extending through an aperture in the top of the base 12 and into the recess is a hub 15. A rivet 16 passes through an aperture in the latch lever 17 and through the hub 15; A plate 18 rests against theend faces of the lugs 14 and the under face vof the hub 15, this plate being held in position by riveting the end of the rivet 16 over the plate 18. The latch lever 17 is thus rotatably mounted upon the base 12. A conical spring 21 has one end arranged in a notch in the hub 15 andthe other end passed around a stud 22 projecting from the base 12. This spring tends normally to hold the latch lever 17 with its handle 23 engaging the stop 24V on the base 12.
In the base 12 is provided a groove 25 in which is slidably mounted a detent 26. The detent 26 is provided with ak shoulder 27 progecting above the edge of the groove in posi- Vtion to be engaged by the handle 23 when the latch 'lever is rotated out of latching position. Such engagement slides the detent in its groove toward the other sash. At the end` of the detent is provided a hook 28 which, when the detent is thus slid, drops over the end to the bottom of the groove by gravity and fastens the detent against movement inthe "opposite, direction. The detent'is provided with a slot 29 through which extends a pin 30. The arrangement of the slot 29 is such that, when the hook 28 overlies the edge of the base member 12, the upper edge of the oppositer end of the detent is arranged in the pathwayof the handle 23, thereby preventing rotation of the lever 17 under the influence of the spring 21.
On rthesash' 11 is mounted a keeper 31 whichco-operates with the latch lever 1-7 to keeper 31 and in alignment with the detent 26 is a trip member 32. When the sashes 1() and 11 are moved relative to each other to open the window, the trip member 32 rotates when it engages the end of the ldetent 26, but when the sashes 10 and 11 are moved to close, the member 32 engages the end of the detent 26 and lifts it to release the hook 28,
thereby allowingy the detentto be pushed rearwardly by the lever under the iniiuence Y of the spring 21, the lever being continued into fastening relationship with the keeper 31. Y
It is understood, of course,that various structural modiications may be made in this freely slidable horizontally and havin-g a-v portion projecting into the path of said lever, means to positionanother portion-of said detent in the path of said lever in one position ofthe detent, meansa .other than said, levervto hold saidldetent in said posit-iom-a keeper-ato. co-operatewith saidA lever, and
