rlhis invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety sheave blocks.
'lhe object of the invention is 'to provide a block with a housing havingone or both sides hinged to swing open tor removing and replacing the lines.
A further object oli the invention is to provide a block housing with guard flanges separated when one o1u the sides is opened.
Another object of the invention is to provide in connection with said swinging side, spacer blocks co-acting with the said llanges at the upper ends of the housing to separate the lines of cable and to prevent the hands of the workman being drawn into the top ot the block.
A. construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features et the invention.

in the drawings the numeral designates a central vertical partition plate 'from which upright side bars 11 are spaced by spacer members or blocks 12 welded or otherwise secured thereto. Side or cover plates 13 are hinged at their upper ends at 13 to the side bars. rlClie parts 10, 11, 12 and 13 Yform a housing. A becket bolt 14.- passes through the upper ends of the parts 10 and 11 and an upper becket 15 has its ears pivoted on said bolt on each side of the partition between the side bars.
A lower becket bolt 16 passes through the lower end olf the housing and a lower becket is pivoted thereon. 1his becket comprises a hook member 17 and a keeper member 20, the latter having spaced ears 19 at its lower end receiving an ear 18 on the end of the bill olf the hook member. A locking bolt 21 is passed through the ears. When it is desired to thread the lower becket thebolt 21 is withdrawn and the keeper member is swung to one side.

along each vertical edge. rlhe adjacent edges oi these llanges, as is shown in Fig. 3, are slightly spaced apart, but the flanges are substantially alined. These flanges co-acting with the spacer blocks 12 coverY the lines oi: the cable and protect the .vorltmans hands. A she-ave bolt 23 is mounted transversely in the bars 11 and the plate- 10. Sheaves 211 are mounted in said bolt on each sideot the plate 10 and between 'the bars 11. The blocks 12 overhang the sheaves. The side plates 13 have openings 25 for the bolt 23 so that said pla-tes are tree to swing when released.
It will be seen that the lower becket bolt 16 passes through the lower ends of the side plates 13 and when it is desired t'o open one or both oit said plates the bolt must be re moved. llhen one of the plates is swung outward on its hinge 13 itsV flanges 22 are displaced from the llanges et the other plate and the block thus opened 'for the removal or replacement olf" the cable lines. It is pointed out that only onebf the plates may be hinged and the other suitably fastened to its side bar, if desired. Handles 27 may be provided on the side plates.
Various changes in the size and shape ot the different parts, as well as modifications and alterations, may be made within the scope of the claims.
That l claim, is:
1. In a safety sheave block, a support, a
becket from which the support is suspended, l
side plates mounted on the support, a sheave journaled on the support and having its vertical sides between the plates7 and flanges along the plates directed transversely of the sheave, the vertical outer'edges of the flanges ot one plate being contiguous to the outer :tree edges of the flanges of the other plate, said flanges forming guards for the groove of the sheave, one ot said plates being hinged to swing outwardly from the vertical side of the sheave to separate the flanges.
2. In a. safety sheave block, a support, a becket from which the support is suspended, side plates mounted on the support, a sheave journaled on the support and having its vertical sides between the plates, flanges along the plates directed transversely ot' the sheave, the vertical outer edges of the ilanges of one pla-te being contiguous to the outer free edges or" the flanges ot the other plate, said flanges forming guards for the groove of the sheave, one of said plates being hinged to swing outwardly from the vertical side of the sheave to separate the flanges, and a spacer member at the center of the upper end of the support overhanging the sheare relatively between the plates, and on each side of the vertical axis of the sheave7 the ends of the spacer member being?r adjacent the upper ends of the guard flanges.
3. In a. safety sheare block, a. pair of vertical side bars, a spacer block between said side. bars, upper and lower beckets pivoted to the ends of said side bars, side plates mounted on said side bars, a. sheave journaled between said side bars and said plates, and longitudinal guard flanges along the plates directed transversely of the sheaves, one of said plates being hinged to one ot the side bars for swinging outwardly at an angle to the vertical side of the sheave to separate its flanges from the flanges of the other plate.
