GUARD FINGER AND LEDGER PLATE.

`rlhis invention relates to `new and useful improvements in guard lingers and ledger plates for mower siclrles.

rlhe principal object ot the invention is to provide a construction of devices of this character whereby the usual inconvenient and laborious method of breaking rivets, and reriveting new ledger plates, is completely obviated.

Another objectis to provide a guard linger and ledger plate construction wherein the plate is held in proper and firm position'on the finger, but may be easily and quickly removed by the use of a nail, or similar instrument.

A. further object is to provide a construction wherein the forward end of the ledger plate is spring pressed rearwardly into engagement with a seat, whereby said plate is positively held against i displacement, or movement in any direction, accidentally.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanyingl drawing.

P ft'rring jiarticularly to the accompanying drawing, there is shown a guard :linger having the body portion 10, forn'lefl with the rear attaching portion, and the front pointed nose, shown respectively at 11 and 12, together with the upwardly and rearwardly inclined blade 13, which overlies the cavity 14, in the body of the finger. In the nose portion of the finger there is formed a bore 15, and seated in said bore is a coil spring 16. rlhe rear of the body portionis provided with a vertical transverse wall 1'?, and formed in the upper face of said wall, and transversely thereof, are the recesses 18, each having its outer wall inclined upwardly and outwardly to receive thereon the beveled cutting edge of the ledger plate 19.

The rear ends of the side walls of the bore 15 are out out, as at 9.2, to form notches to receivc the shoulders 23 of the forward end of the ledger plate 2-1. rlhe rear, or wider Y end, of the ledger plate' 24 is formed with a central V-shaped notch or recess 25, the side walls of which are beveled, at 26, to engage beneath the undercut, beveled side walls 27 of the lug 20, whereby to provide a seat for the rear end of the plate which will hold the said plate against upward movement. This seat also serves to maintain the rear end of the ledger plate against sidewise movement, as well, with the result` that the plate is tightly held on the vguard finger.

To remove the ledger plate from the guard linger, a suitable implement, such a nail, is inserted in the recess, 21, and proper prying action brought to bear against the lower face of the plate, with the result that the rear end of the plate will be forced upwardly and forwardly, against the tension of the spring 16, and released from the seat or lug 20, whereupon the spring will forcev the plate rearwardly into a position to be easily picked up by the operator.

What is claimed is:

A guard linger having a ledger plate seat having rearwardly diverging beveled side walls, a vertical lug formed centrally on the seat and having its side walls underbeveled and converging forwardly of the guard Alinger, the forward end of the lug having a vertical recess, a ledger plate on the seat having its rear end formed with a tf-shaped recess the walls'of which are beveled to properly engage beneath the converging walls of the lug, the inner angle of the rl-shaped recess being disposed forwardly of the vertical recess to permit introduction of a ledger plate prying tool, and means on the guard linger for urging the ledger plate into engagement with said lug.
