invention consists of certain novel features of constructlon, as Wlll be more fully deappended. claim. In the accompanying drawings:
Figure I is a side elevation partly in section illustrating my improved .chute closing unit as applied to the lower end of the chute, the gate being shown in dotted lines in posi-.
tion to close the discharge opening therethrough.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the chute closing unit showing the head member, with the gate suspended to close the. opening. through the bottom thereof.
Figure 3 1s a central sectional elevation of my improved head member and gate.
' Figure 4 is a central longitudinal section through the head member and gate and showing the operating handle as attached to the gate.

which are employed for constructing one form of my improved head member of the closing unit.
It is found in the operation of closure members for chutes and the like, particularly those for controlling chutes employed in conducting such granular material as grain, sand, gravel, fine coal and the like. of advantage to provide a head member for controlling the opening through the chute which may be bolted in position over the endof the chute, the same being preferably provided with a circular or tapering bottom portion ;to close to be secured to the lower and when With these and other objects in view, the

wall plate through which a discharge slot or opening is formed; and to provide a gate member having elongated side arms which are pivotally connected to suspend the gate inposition to swing under this circular body weight of the material-over the discharge opening is supported by, the pivots on which the gate is hungwhere sistance in swinging the gatewhil-e under pressure'of its load is reduced to the minimum'and the natural tendency of this gate either with or without 'a-load upon it is to H its'normal or closed position the material is being. discharged swingf'back to through the openingit requires the minimum amount of pressure to swing the gate to cut ofi' the flow and close the discharge opening;
and the followingisa detailed description of the present embodiment of my invention and showing one construction of chute clos ingunit by means of which these advantageous results i may be accomplished Withfrefer'enceto'the drawings, 10*designates the head member of my improved chute closing unit, which is herein shown as being formed of a bottom plate 11 curved on'the arc of a circle and as being provided with a. transverse elongated slot 12 through the bottom portion thereof.
The ends of this arcuate plate are closed by the end wall plates 13 connected thereto by a welding operation. Along the opposite upper edges tom plate, I connect the angle bars 15, preferably bya welding'operation, also across the opposite end plates 13 I connect the angle bars 16 preferably by a welding operation and these angle bars are herein shown as be ing provided with bolt holes 17 through which bolts 18 may be passed for securing this closing head'unit to the bottom of the chute 19.
In order to close this slotted. discharge opening 12 in the bottom of the head member, I have formed a gate member 20 having a bottom closure plate 21 with elongated side arms at 23 to receive the pivot pins 24:.
These arms areset to straddle the end of the head-member and to suspend the clo sure plate 21 beneath the slot 12 therein, this plate being preferably sharpened or formedthin at its edges 22 so as, to'cut 119 V the opening therethrough. It will be seen that by this construction the by the frictional re- 14 of this arcuate bot- 22 pierced at their upper ends as through the granular material in moving the plate to closed position when the material is flowing rapidly through the discharge opening 12.
These pivot pins 23L are arranged to eX- tend through the spacer plates 25 and through the walls 26 of the angle bars 16 and through the end walls 13 of the heads and in which position they may be screwed, welded or otherwise secured.
In order to provide simple means for operating this gate member, I-have formed a loop-shaped handle 27 having side arms 28 secured to the opposite side arms 22 of the closure gate, which handle serves as a very convenient construction to be engaged by a hook or bar by the operator to either swing it from closure positionto permit the material to flow from'the chute and be as readily swung back to closed position to cut off this flow.
By suspending this gate on pivots at a I point well above the discharge opening the gate is very easily swung from closing position even when carrying a full load upon it sheet metal and the parts welded into posi- 7 head-member may be formed complete as a single casting, if desired.
My improved unit is very simple and practical in construction and is effective in its operation and the discharge openingfrom a chute or other storing or conducting member may be nicely controlled and easily operated to be opened and permit a. free discharge and as easily closed to shutoff the flow of material therefrom.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to 'be understood that I re serve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible,-the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claim. 1
I claim: I a
A chute closing unit comprising ahead member having side walls, and an arcuate shaped bottom wall provided with a discharge openingat its lowest point, a pair of arms pivotally'mounted on said side walls,
an arcuate gate member of the same curvature as the bottom wall disposed on the outer convex surface thereof andsupported by said arms, and abail-shaped-operating han dle attached to said arms and'disposedbe low said arcuate gate.
