12 represents a split spring lock washer which has formed upon its inner periphery the lugs 13 the latter being adapted to slide in the grooves 5 of the bolt, the object of which is to prevent the turning of the lock washer independent ofthe bolt but to per mit its travel thereon lengthwise of the bolt.- This lock washer is placed; star the bolt so that its downturned end 14 will engage with the teeth 3 upon the face of the turret after.
the manner of a ratchet when the cap 8 is snapped into place as before described, thus confining the washer in position and putting sufficient pressure upon the same to keep the ratchet tooth let thereon in constant engagement with the teeth 3.
From this description it will be seen that as the nut is set up upon the boltthe teeth 3 will travel under the ratchet tooth 14 and whenever the nut has been screwed home this engagement will prevent any retrograde movement of the nut, thus securely locking it against displacement either accidentally or by vibration.
When it is desired to unlockthe nut it is only necessary to turn the retaining cap upon its axis until the latch tongues 9 ride from beneath the shoulders 11 after which the cap may be readily withdrawn from the turret ivin access to the lockin washer in order that it may be disengaged from the teeth 3 and permit the backing oil of the nut The modification shown in Figs. 13 to 18 inclusive, provides for the retaining cap 21 qhaving latch lugs 22 formed upon its inner surface by either pressingv portions of the metal cap inward or by partially cutting portions of themetal from the cap and pressingthe same inward as clearly shown in Fi -n14. These latch lugswill be forced apart when the cap is forced over the turret on account of there being sufficient spring in the cap to permit the elongation thereof upon thedh ameter on which the lugs are formed by the distortion of the cap from a true circle and to an oval, as clearly shown in Fig. 18, and when the upper edge of these lugs pass under the shoulders 11 of the depressions 6 the spring of said cap will cause these lugs to snap beneath their shouldersfthus holding the cap against accidental displacement but permitting its removal by the turning thereof upon its axis until the lugs ride up upon the round portion of the turret when the cap is free to be withdrawn,
While there are various other modifications that might be here shown and described many of which will be obvious to one skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, Ihave deemed it unnecessary to extend the showing and description of my present lnvention beyond that herein em bodied, but I do not wish to limit this in- 'ventionto" the modifications here shown nor to the details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied wlthln the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
.Havmg thus fully described my invention, what I clalm as new and useful is:--
1. A loclr nut comprising a nut with a turret formed thereon and teeth formed on the face of the turret, a bolt on whichsaid nut is threaded, said bolt haying spline grooves lengthwise thereof, a split spring lock-washer one end of which is adapted to engage said teeth as a ratchet, lugs formed with the washer and adapted to run in the spline grooves, undercut depressions on the sides of the turret, a cap adapted to fit over Til the turret, and means for detachably holding the cap in place on the turret whereby the split spring lock-washer is held in operative position and providing for the removal of the cap for the unlocking of the locking means.
2. In a device of the character described,
a nut having a turret formed thereon, teeth formed upon the face of the turret, a bolt upon which the nut and turret are threaded, said bolt having lengthwise grooves formed therein, a lock-washer for engage ment with said teeth, said washer having lugs fitted to run in said grooves, a cap, inwardly projectinglugs on the cap, and an undercut depression on the sides of the turret with which the last named lugs are adapted to engage by the distortion of the cap. 4
3. A nut lock comprising the combination of a longitudinally grooved bolt, a nut for threaded engagement with the bolt, ratchet teeth on said nut, a lock washer having means registering with the groove in the bolt and other means coacting with j the ratchet teeth and a cap detachably connected with the nut and coacting with the lock washer so as to retain the latter in working position relative to the nut as said nut is moved along the bolt. a
