The present invention relates to containers and particularly to cracker containers or and one object of the invention closure members or flaps which when the caddy is in closed assembled form are folded down over the cover of the caddy, these top closure members having removable or tearofi' portions, the portions of the top closure members remaining after removal of the tear-ofl portions extending inwardly at right angles to the top edges of the ends of the caddy and constituting closure means for the ends adjacent to the tops of the end walls and also contributing to the rigidlty of the end walls, the cover of the caddy when said remaining portions are thus arranged being folded down over said remaining portions of the top closure members and being supported at its ends thereby.

Another object of the invention is to provide a container or caddy having a one piece tuck cover.

Another object is to provide a containeror caddy having a cover provlded with a removable or tear-ofi portion, the portion of the cover remaining after removal of the tear-off port-ion extending inwardly at rlght angles to the to edge of one side of the caddy and constituting closure means along the top edge of the side wall and contrlbuting to the rigidity of the side wall and afit'ording support at one side of the caddy for a temporary cover.

Another object is to provide a container or caddy having a cover with a window for displaying the contents of the caddy, this cover being provided with a tear-oil portion similar to the first mentioned cover.

Another object is to provide a caddy having a side closure member extending in-' wardly at right angles to the top edge of one of the sides of the caddy and'provided with locking means consisting of projections and adjacent cuts or slots for cooperating with the locking tab on the cover of the caddy for retaining the cover in closing position. r i

Another object is to provide a container or caddy of the character described which is formed by folding a single blank.

Referring to Fig. 5, the blank from which caddy is formed is of box-board, card-board or other suitable foldable material and has a narrow rectangular main ortion or strip defined from the rest of the blank by the parallel score lines 1010 extending longitudinally of the blank for the length of the blank, and includes the side forming sections 11, 12, 13 and 14 of like shape and dimensions and defined from each other by the score lines 15, 16 and 17 extending transversely of the main portion. The side section 14.- has on one end the attaching extension 18 defined therefrom by the score line 19, and intended to be adhesively or otherwise suitably secured to the free end of the side section 11. The main portion or strip of the blank has foldably connected to one side thereof along the line of one of the parallel scorings 10 the free-hanging bottom sections 20, 21, 22 and 23 of like shape and dimensions, each slightly less in length than each of the side sectionsand in width sub- 100 stant-ially one-half the length of each side The side section 14 has foldabiy connected thereto on the side thereof opposite to the bottom section 23 along the adjacent score line 10 the top closure section 24 105 which in length is slightly 'less than the side section 14; and in width from the adjacent score line 10 to its outer edge is substantially one-half the length of the section 13. The top closure section 24 is provided 110 with the tear-ofi portion 25 defined by the tear-off line 26 extending parallel to the score line 10, the tear-ofi line 26 preferably being a series of perforations through the blank, whereby when the portion 25 is removed, the remaining portion of the top closure section provides a side closure member 27 for one of the sides of the caddy. The side sect-ion 12 hasfoldably connected thereto on its side opposite to the bottom section 21 the free-hanging top closure section 28 having the tear-0E portion 29 and the side closure member 30 remaining after removal of the portion 29, the top closure section 28 being similar to the top closure section 24 and intended to cooperate therewith. The side section 13 has on theside thereof opposite to the bottom section 22 and foldably connected thereto by the adjacent score line 10, the two-part free-hanging supporting and side closure extension 31 of slightly less total length than the side section 13 and in width substantially the same as the side closuremembers 27 and 30, the supporting section31 having in the line of the scoring 10 the cuts or slits 32, and being cut away to provide a recess which forms the projections 32' spaced apart at their ends from each other. The side section 11 has on the side thereof opposite to the bottom section 20, the free-hanging cover 33 foldably connected thereto along the adjacent score line 10. The cover 33 is square in shape, each side in length being substantially the same as the side forming sections, and has on the edge of its side opposite to its foldable connection to the side section 11, the locking tab or tuck 34 which is engageable in the cuts 32 before mentioned. The cover 33 has the tear-oil ed with the window has the removable portion 38 defined by the tear-off line 39 and is provided with a locking tuck similar to that of the first described cover. The intramarginal portion of the cover 37 is cut away so that the remaining portion of the cover provides a frame for supporting in the open intramarginal space a filler 40 of transparent material, such as cellophane, celluloid or gelatine, adhesively or otherwise suitably secured at its edges to the edges of the under side of the frame adjacent to the opening in the frame, thus providing a window for the cover. a

To erect the caddy from the blank the side sections 11, 12, 13 and 14 are bent on the score lines 15, 16 and 17 and are brought togetherat the ends of the sections, the attaching extension 18 being bent on the score line 19 and secured to the free end of the side section 11, thus forming a four sided Wall structure open at top and bottom. To

the under side of these sections, the bottom sections being suitably secured together in these positions to provide a firm bottom for the caddy. The cover'33 is bent on the adjacent score line 10 to lie over the top opening of the wall structure and rests at its front edge on the supporting extension 31, the locking tuck 34 being engaged in the cuts 32 for securing the cover in place.

The top closure sections 24 and 28 are bent on the score line 10 adjacent to each of these sections and brought together over the cover 33 or 37 as the case may be, the caddy then being in the assembled form shown in Figs. 1 and 3. By lifting the top closure sections and tearing ofl" the portions 25 and 29 and lifting the cover 33 or 37 and folding the remaining portions 27 and 30 over the top edges of the ends of the caddy and folding the cover down over the portions 27 and 30 the c addy is then in the assembled form shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and when packed may .be-securely closed by a strip of suitable -material, not shown, adhesively or otherwise suitably secured over the juncture of the top closure members and to the adjacent sides Ofthe caddy; it being noted that deleterious matter is prevented by the supporting extension 31 from entering the caddy at the front edge of the cover 33 and prevented by the portions 27 and 30, remaining after tearing off the portions 25 and 29, from entering at the side edges of the cover, and that the supporting extension 31 and said portions 27 and 30 conduce' to the rigidity of the sides of the caddy.

I thus form from the blank a caddy having side walls, bottom members for closing the opening between the side walls at the bottomof the side walls, a cover for closing the opening between the side walls at the top of the side walls, a support for the front edge of the cover to which the cover is lockable and which closes the caddyalong the front edge of the cover, and closure members at the top end of the side walls nor mally overlying the cover and protecting the cover and havlng tear-off portions, the portions of said members remaining after removal of the tear-off portions being folded inwardly so that they lie beneath the cover and close the caddy along opposite edges of the cover, the above described arrangement of the top closure members and cover being the same relative to both forms of cover.

A feature of the invention is the provision of the locking cuts and projections of the supporting and side closure member 31 which conduce to economy of material in the manufacture of the caddy in that the out out portion of recess which forms the projections provides the locking tuck 34 on the cover section of another blank from which a second caddy is formed.

By raisin the cover 33 or 37 and the top closure mem rs 24 and 28 to vertical positions ready and free access to the caddy for ppcking it is bad; the top closure members ing in position overlying the cover when the caddy is packed and stored or in transit protect the cover, this feature being especially advantageous when the cover is provided with .a window of relatively fragile transparent material; and it will be noted also that when the caddy is in assembled closed form it is strengthened at its top and bottom by members which overly each other and provide a double thickness of the material.

When the caddy is used by vendors the tear-01f portion of the cover 33 and the tearofi' portions of the top closure members may be removed and the remaining portions of these closure members folded inwardly over the ends of the caddy and a substitute cover, not shown, of transparent material and such as is in common use by vendors, may be laid over the ends of the caddy and supported by the before mentioned-side closure member, said remaining portions of the top closure members and the remaining portion of the cover, thus affording a display of the contents of the caddy. Or the cover 33 may be folded over outwardly and the substitute cover used in its stead, in which case the caddy remains in its original condition and is available for future use in assembled closed form.

When the caddy is provided with a window cover 37, the tear-oil portions of the side closure members may be removed thus exposing the window, and the remaining portions of these members folded to he beneath the cover which is locked in closing position and a display caddy thus provided, or if the vendor for any. reason so prefers the tear-01f portion of the window cover may be removed and the before mentioned substitute cover may be used for display of the contents of the caddy.

What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A caddy formed of foldable material and having side walls, bottom members for closing the opening formed between the side walls at the bottom of the side walls, a cover for closing the opening formed between the side walls at the top of the side walls, and

closure members at the top end of the side walls cooperating with the cover for closing the caddy at the top and having removable portions, the portions of said members rer maining after removal of said removable portions. providing when the cover is in covering position means for closing the caddy at oppositely related side edges of the cover.

2. A caddy formed of foldable material and having side walls, bottom members for closing the opening formed between the side walls at the bottom ofthe side walls, a cover for closing the opening formed-between the side walls at the top of thevside walls and closure members at the top end of the side walls and having removable POIAlOIlS, said closure members normally ove ying the cover when the cover is in closing position, the portions of the closure members remaining after the removal of, the removable portions providing means for closing the caddy at oppositely related side edges of the cover by disposing said remaining portions in a plane eneath the plane ofthe cover when the cover is in closing position.

3. A caddy formed of foldable materialand having side walls, bottom members for closing the opening formed between the side walls at the bottom of the side walls, a cover for closing the opening. formed between the side walls at the top of the side walls, means for supporting the cover at one edge of the cover when the cover is in coverin position and for closing the caddy at said e ge of the cover, and closure members at the top end of the side walls cooperating with the cover for closing the caddy at the top and having removable portions, the portions of said members remaining after removal of said removable portions providing when the cover is in covering position means for closing the caddy at oppositely related side edges of the cover.

4. A caddy formed of foldable material and having side walls, bottom members for closing the opening formed between the side walls at the bottom of the side walls, a cover ,for closing the openin' formed between the side walls at the top 0 the side walls, means for supporting the cover at its front edge when the cover is in covering position and for closing the caddy at the front edge of the cover, means cooperating between the cover andsaid supporting means for looking the cover in covering position, and closure members at the top end of the side walls and normally overlying the cover when the cover is in covering position and having removable portions, the portions of said member remaining after removalof said removable portions providing means for closing the caddy at oppositely related side edges of the cover.

5. A caddy formed of foldable material and having side walls, bottom members for closing the opening formed between the side walls at the bottom of the side walls, a cover connected to the rear side wall at the top of the rear side wall and foldable for closing the opening formed between the side walls at the top of the side walls, a member connected to the front side wall at the top of the front side wall and foldable to position for supporting the cover at its front edge when the cover is in covering position and'for closing the caddy at the front edge of the cover, means cooperating between the cover and said supporting member for locking the cover in covering position, and closure mem bers connected to oppositely related side walls at thg top of the side walls and foldable to position for normally overlying the cover and having removable portions, the portions of said members remaining after removal of said removable portions providing means for closing the caddy at oppositely related side edges of the cover.

6. In a caddy formed of foldable material, a cover foldable to covering position, and closure members foldable to position for normally overlying the cover and having removable portions, the portions of said members remaining after removal of the removable portions being foldably disposable in a plane beneath the plane of the cover when the cover is in closing position.

7. In a caddy formed of foldable material, a cover foldable to covering position and having a removable portion, and closure members foldable to position for normally overlying the cover and having removable portions, the portions of said members remaining after removal of the removable portions being fo-ldably disposable in the same plane as the plane of the portion of the cover remaining after removal of the removable portion of the cover.

8. In a caddy formed of foldable material and having wall members, a member foldably connected to one of the wall members and provided with oppositely related open ended cuts and oppositely related projections adjacent to the cuts, the projections being spaced apart at their ends, and a cover provided with a locking tuck insertible in said cuts and engageable with-said projections and when in locking position disposed in the interior of the caddy against the inner side of said wall member.

9. In a caddy formed of foldable material and having wall members, a two-part member foldably connected to one of the wall members and provided with oppositely related open ended cuts and oppositely related projections adjacent to the cuts, the projections being spaced apart at their ends, and a. cover provided with a locking tuck insertible in said cuts and engageable with said projections and when in looking position disposed in the interior of the caddy against the inner side of said wall member.

10. In a caddy formed of foldable material, a cover having a window and foldably movable to covering position, and closure members foldably movable to position for normally overlying the cover for protecting the cover and preventing view through the window thereof when the cover is in covering position, said members having removable portions which when removed expose said window, the portions of said members remaining after removal of said removable portions providing means for closing the caddy at oppositely related top edges of the cadd 11. In a caddy formed of foldable material and having side walls, a cover connected to one of the side walls and having an in tramarginal opening and foldably movable to covering position, the portions of the cover adjacent to said opening constituting a window frame, a filler of transparent material in said opening, and closure members connected to oppositely related side walls and foldably movable to position for nor mally overlying the cover for protecting the cover and preventing view through said filler when the cover is in covering position, said members having removable portions which when removed expose said filler, the portions of said members after removal of said removable portions providing means for closing the caddy at oppositely related top edges of the caddy.

12. In a caddy formed of foldable material, side walls, top closure members foldably connected to ends of the side walls and having tear-ofi' portions defined by perforations through the members, said portions being removable from the members by tearing the portions off on the line of said perforations, the portions of said members remaining after removal of the tear-ofi portions constituting side closure members and providing rigidity for the side walls.

13. In a caddy formed of foldable material, side walls, a cover foldably connected to one of the side walls for closing the open ing formed between the side walls at the top of the side walls, and top closure members foldably connected to the ends of oppositely related side walls and having tear-ofl portions defined by perforations through the members, said port-ions being removable from the members b tearing the portions oil on the line of said perforations, the portions of saidmembers remaining after removal of the tear-oil portions constituting means for closing the caddy at oppositely related; side edges of the cover when the cover is in covering position and providing rigidity for the side walls.

14. A blank for forming a caddy by folding the blank on the score lines thereof, said blank having a rectangular main portion defined on the blank by parallel score lines extending longitudinally of the blank, said main portion being composed of side sections defined from each other by score lines ing an. attaching extension on its end,

the side section at one end of the main portion having a free end and the side section at the opposite end of the main portion hayd sai main portion having on one side thereof wing portions consisting of free hanging bottom sections and having on its opposite side wing portions consisting of free-hangin to closure sections a two- )art freehanging support and closure sect-ion located intermediately of the top closure sections and a free-hanging cover section adjacent to one of the top closure sections, said top closure sections having removable portions defined by tear-off lines extending longitudinally of the top closure sections.

15. A blank for forming a caddy by folding the blank on the score lines thereof, said blank having a rectangular main portion defined on the blank by parallel score lines e tending longitudinally of the blank, said main portion being composed of side sections defined from each other by score lines extending transversely of the main portion, the

side section at one end of the main portion having a free end and the side section at the opposite end of the main portion having an attaching extension on its end, the side sec shape and of like dimensions, said main portion having on one side thereof wing portions consisting of free-hanging bottom sections and having on its opposite side Wing portions consisting of free-hanging top closure sections, a two-part free-hanging support and closure section located intermediately of the top closure sections and provided with locking means, and a free-hanging cover section adjacent, to one 40 of the top closure sections and having a tearprovided with locking means cooperating with the first mentioned locking means, said top closure sections having removable portions defined by tear-oil lines of the top closure sections, the bottom sections and top closure sections being of oblong shape and. of like dimensions and each in length slightly less than the length of a side section and in off portion width substantially one half the length of a side section, the support and closure section -being in length slightly less than the length of a side section, the cover being square, each side thereof being the length of a side 5 section.

18. In a caddy formed of foldable material,

free-hanging closure means having a removable port-ion, the portion of said means remaining after removal of the removable portion being foldable inwardly relative to the caddy and contributing to the rigidity of the ad acent caddy wall, and free-hanging closure means underlying the first mentioned closure means and having a removable portion, the portion of the last mentioned closure means remaining after removal of the removable portion being foldable inwardly relative to the caddy and contributing to the rigidity of the adjacent caddy wall.

In a caddy formed of foldable material, free-hanging closure means having tear-ofi-perforations through the material, free-hanging closure means underlying the first mentioned closure means and havin tear-ofi perforations through the materia, said underlyin closure means blocking passage of deleterious matter through the perforations of the overlying closure means and said overlying closure means blocking passage of deleterious matter through the perforations of the underlying closure means.

20. In a caddy formed of foldable material, free-hangingclosure means having a removable portlon defined by tear-ofi perforations through the material, and free-hanging closure means underlying the first mentioned closure means and having a removable portion defined by tear-ofl perforations through the material, said underlying closure means blocking passage of deleterious matter through the perforations of the overlying closure means and said overlying closure means blocking passage of deleterious matter through the perforations of the underlying closure means.
