This invention relates to peep holesand thelike and to improved closures therefor and ineans'for operating them. My invention has many applications among which may be mentioned doors in apartment houses, lodges; also, enclosures where certain precautions are taken for guarding lives and property, etc. i g g I A principal object of my invention to provide means for raising and lowering the gate for the peep hole. I

Another principal object is to provide mechanism adapted to r adily raise or lower the gate from the inner side of the inclosure, and to anchor the gate against movement by any attempt to raise or lower the same from a position exterior of theinclosure.

Another object of my invention is to provide means for safe-guarding persons or property within the inclosure from exterior attacks through the peep holes by provldmg means for closing the gate and automatically locking the same in closed position against any attempt from the exterior-to open the same. 7

It is a further object to provide a device of this character in which the shutter may be maintained in any adjusted position.

Referring now in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout: 5 represents one of the sides of an inclosure in which is mounted the peep hole plate 6 provided with the peep holes 20, 20. The plate 1sprovided with vertical guides 7, one at each side thereof, between which is adapted to slide the gate 8 in an upward and downward direction in the embodiment shown in the drawings, purposes of these guides being to restrict lateral movement of the gate and to maintain it in adjusted position and to add strength to the peep hole plate 6.

In themanipulation of the carrier in a downward direction, the pins 18 will ride in the slots at their outer ends andmaintain the dogs 15 out of engaging contact with theguides 7. Furthermore, by means of the dogs 15 the gate 8 may be maintained in any raised position.

I have described what I believe to be the best embodiment of my invention. I do not wish to belimited in patent protection to the embodiment shown, however, but what I desire to cover by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.

1. In combination with a peep hole structure, a .slidable gate adapted to cover and clear the peep hole opening, guides for said gate, detents swivelly mounted on said gate, a carrier, pins mounted in said detents, said pins being adapted to operate in slots in said carrier and withdraw the ends of said detents from contact with said guides upon direct operation of said carrier and to bind in said guides upon indirect operation of said carrier. V

In combination with a peep hole structure, aslidable gate adapted to cover and clear the peep hole opening, guides adapted to maintain the gate'in' alignment, a carrier loosely connected to and adapted to operate said gate, and means for maintaining said carrier in ope 'ative. connection With said gate. 4.
