The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved form of guard for punch presses;
This and other objects of the invention will be illustrated in the drawings, described in the specification and'pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.

On the upright 2 I fasten the hinge bracket l and on the upright 3 I fasten the lock bracket 5. On the hinge bracket is mounted to. swing a hinge member or leaf" 6. To thisleaf is riveted or bolted a bridge 7 which is preferably made of cold rolled steel. The lock bracket 5 is recessed torec-eivethe free end'of' the bridgeand the bridge is made preferably longer than is needed to extend acrossthe press between the brackets andis also made wider than the recess of the lock bracket. The hinge and bridge and lock bracket are fitted to the pres? @n'dthe bridge is then marked to locate the opening of the lock bracket and is then cut away so as to make a close fitwith this recess. p Presses are made in a great variety of sizes and by making the bridge andits sus-' taining parts in this way one size of bridge and parts can be accommodated to presses of considerablevariation in size.
On thebridgeis mounted to slide a yoke or pivot head 8 whichmakes'aclose fit with the bridge. The yoke'orhead is provided with the set- screws 9 and 10=by which it may be clamped in any desired position on the bridge, the set screw bearing directly onthe top of the bridge. As a'substitute therefor, the opening. in the yoke may be made sufli ciently wide to contain the wedge 11 and the wedge 12. The wedge 12 may be forceddown between the wedge 11 and the bridge 7 by the set screw 13 securely clamping the yoke 8 in place on .the bridge. The yoke may also be'perforated asindicated'at 13 and the bridge is perforated in like manner at frequent intervals so that a pin may be passed thru the yoke and the bridge locking the yoke in any position desired.
On the bottom of the yoke or pivot head is provided a boss 14 on which is carried a stud 15, on the outer end ofwhich is mounted to rock a guard head116 and on the inner end of which is mounted'to rock the guard head 17 from whichare supported the guard arms 18 and 19 and in which guard heads are adjustably mounted the guard arms. The inner guard head is slotted as shown at 20 and in this engages a pin or'anti-friction roller 21 carried on a plate 22 adjustably mounted on the ram of the-press so that as the ram moves up and down, the'pin causes the inner guard head andgua'rdarrn 19'to rock therewith.
The hinge and lock brackets are first fastened to the. frame of the press-at the desired height and the bridge is then fitted to thelock bracket. Thenthe yoke is fastened inplace to the bridge infrontof the middle lOU pressed between the clamp 29 and the lug 32 by which the parts are held in normal position. The actuating lever has a series 7 i of holes therein by which it may be adjustably connected to the press and'the link 28 to fit presses of. different sizes and conditions.
' On the bridge '7 is carried a bracket 33 which may be clamped in position thereon by a set screw 34. On the bottom of this bracket is provided aboss-35 from which depends an arm 36 which carries a guard 37 Alug 38 is provided on the bracket and a 'lug39 is carried on the guard arm which enqgages therewith and prevents'the guard tends up far enough so as to engage with from'swinging to the left but permits it to swing to the right and away from the ram of the press.
The guard 37 prevents the operator from reaching around the guards 18 and 19 so that the operator is compelled to feed the press from' in front of the press where the guards 18 and 19 will more effectively move his hand out of the danger zone.
The lock braeket'f is perforated'to receive a pin 40, which pin is'adapted to pass thru the lock bracket on the outside of the bridge so as to securely lock the bridge to the bracket. This pin extends below the bracket and is perforated as indicated at 1 so that the hasp of a pad lock can be passed thru the pin to lock the bridge and guards thereon in place on the press. On the lock bracket is provided an eccentric lever 4-3 which is adapted to bear against the inner face of the bridge in order to force it against the pin to secure a firmengagement therewith and with the lock bracket. By withdrawing the pin 40 and disconnecting the link 23 from the bell crank 24: the bridge is released at the right so that it may be swung on the hinge to the left carrying the bridge and three guards away fromthe press.
On the lock bracket is mounted to slide a bolt 44, which bolt has a finger thereon adapted whenthe bolt is moved to the left to engage under the upper arm of the bell crank 24 and lock the bell crank against rotation. between which is pivotally. mounted the latch 55 having a shoulder or hook 56 on the lower end thereof. ,The latch extends upwardly at 58 and a'spring' 57 is provided between theextension and look bracket norniallyholding the latch to the right at the top and to the left at the bottom with the hook in engagement with the actuating lever 2 ti holding it up and preventing the tripping or the press. When the bridge is closed, the tongue 52 engages the extension 58 and rocks it to the left compressing the spring 57 and removing the hook 56 from below the actuating lever 2-6. This will release the actuating leverand permit the operationiof the presswhen the bridge is closed but will hol'clthe'actuating lever locked when the bridge is opened for the changing of the dies. r
In Figure 3 I-have shown a modified connection between the pitman and the inner guard. This consists of a link 60 having a turn buckle joint 61 therein and a. ratchet face joint 62 therein. The lower end'of the link connects to the crank 63 on the guard head by a ball and socket joint 64. and the upper end connects to the pitman by a ball j and socket joint 65. When'the bridge is opened, the bolt (36 1s removed from the ratchet face joint permitting the freedom of movement of the bridgeand when the bridge is closed these'two parts of the ratchet face joint are clamped together by the bolt. The
length of the link is adjusted by the turn buckle which moves the guard head and brings the guard into the correct normal position.
Instead ofswinging the bridge to move the guards away from the front of the ram of the press, the pivot head may be loosened on the bridge to permit its sliding endways on the bridge either to the right or to the left of the ram of the press carrying the guards with it. be turned to vary the normal position of the guard from the vertical.
It will be understood that there are three guards used in my invention. The outer guard-driven by the treadleis named safety first, the inner guard driven'by the ram is named safetysecond and theguard 37 isnamed safety third.
I claim: 1. A guard for punch presses having a bridge consisting of a bar, a head mounted to slide laterally on said bar, said bar and head having, engaging surfaces adapted to prevent relative rotation, said head having an opening therethru to receive the bar, a boss on one side of said head having a stud therein, a guard mounted to-rock on said stud. 2. A uard for punch presses having a bridge consisting of a'bar, a head mounted to slide on said bar, said bar and head having engaging surfaces adapted to prevent relative rotation, said head having an opening therethru to receive the bar, a boss on one side of said head having a stud therein, a guard mounted to rock on said stud, means for clamping said head in position on the bridge. 3. A guard for punch presses having a bridge, said bridge being provided with a hinge hearing at the end thereof and being left blank at the other end thereof, a hinge bracket at one end of the bridge, a lock bracket at the other end of the bridge, a recess in said lock bracket adapted to receive the blank end of the bridge, a pin for closing the outer end of the recess and holding the blank end of the bridge in the recess.
4. A guard for punch presses having a bridge, a pivot head mounted to slide lateral- 1y on said bridge, a shock absorber mounted to rest on said bridge and attached to said pivot head.
5. A guard for punch presses having a bridge, a pivot head mounted to slide on said bridge, a shock absorber mounted to rest on said bridge and attached to said pivot head, a bracket mounted to slide on said bridge, guards depending from said pivot head and said bracket, means for clamping said bracket and said pivot head in place on the bridge.
6. A guard for punch presses comprising a bridge,
a lock bracket for supporting one end thereof, a bell crank on said bracket, a
bolt mounted to move on said bracket into 'locklngengagement with said bell crank whenthe bridge isopen, said bridge holding 1 the bolt out of engagement with the bell,

7. A guard for punch presses comprising arbr-idge, a lock bracket for supporting, one end thereof, abellcrank on said bracket, a
bolt mounted to move on said bracket into locking, engagement with said bell crank when the bridge is open, said bridge holding the bolt out of engagement with the bell crank when the bridge is closed, said bell crank holding-the trip in the clutch of the press inoperative while the bolt is in looking position.

11. In a guard for punch presses operated by a treadle, the combination of a pair of brackets, a bridge supported between said brackets, a guard mounted to operate from said bridge, a bell crank mounted on one of said brackets, one end of said bell crank being connected to said treadle and the other end of said bell crank being connected to said guard, means carried on said bracket to prevent the movement of said bell crank.
