This invention relates in general to can closing machines and has more particular reference to devices in such machines for properly spacing and timing the cans in their movement to the seaming mechanism, the present application being a division of my application Serial Number 8035106, filed November 28, 1913, now granted Feb. 14, 1922, Patent No. 1,406,631.
A principal object of the invention 1s the provision of means for automatically separating and arranging the cans in desired relationship during their movement upon a rotatable feeding turret.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a plan view of that portion of a can closing machine in which my invention is embodied; and r Fig. 2 is a partial horizontal section taken through the bed plate upon which the parts of the machine shown in Fig. 1 are supported, and showin thegearing by which the operating parts are driven.
Upon the drawings I have shown a rotatable table 88 and two stationary tables 34 and 35 over which the cans are fed in their travel to the closingor seaming mechanism (not shown). It will be understood that the entire structure is supported upon a suitable base and is arranged about a vertical cylinderical standard 86 and a sleeve 58 shown in section in Fig. 1.
The cans are placed in any suitable manner upon the rotary table 33 and are guided between a detachable arcuate guard 46 and a central disk l8 which latter is rotatable in unison with the table The disk 48 is provided with a plurality of equally spaced projections 49 about its periphery and the guard 16, which is rcmovably secured to the fixed frame by bolts 11, has mounted therein a desired number of yielding spring plates 47, two being shown in the present instance. As the cans crowd one upon the other while being fed by the table 33 they are frictionally engaged by the yieldable members 47 and moved thereon. by the projections 4.9 until Divided and. this application filed January 9, 3.922.

The cans are indicated in outline by the reference character 13 and are di rected by said star wheel 50 about the table 84, being guided by an arcuate guard 51 reinovably secured to said table by bolts a l. The cans are then directed into a guideway where they are engaged by propelling arms or flights 66, which are mounted for rotation above the table 35 and which move said cans to the assembling and seaming A lever 89 pivoted at 90 extends into the guideway 60 and is a part of a device for controlling the feeding of can ends so that no end is fed unless a can is in position to receive it.
The means by which the rotatable members heretofore referred to are driven may be understood by reference to Fig. 2. Power from a suitable source of supply (not shown) is transmitted to a gear 71 secured upon a vertical shaft which carries also a pinion 72 meshing with a gear 73 upon a shaft 74 by which the flights 66 are operated, said gear 73 meshing also with a gear 7 5 carried upon the lower end of a shaft 54 to which is fixedly secured the star wheel 50. A gear .76 is driven by the gear 75 and rotates a shaft 77 carrying at its upper end the rotatable table 33. Said gearing is contained within a box or bed plate 32 and is so arranged that the various operating parts are moved in properly timed relationship.
top plate 78 is provided to hold the disk 48 in place, and it will be understood hat said disk is rotated by the shaft 77 in unison with the table 33.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing; all of its material'advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. In a machine for securing can ends to can bodies, a rotatable feeding member having thereon a plurality of can-engaging and spacing elements, and a relatively stationary outer can-engaging member serving as a can body guide and arranged substantially concentric with the path of said spacing elements, one of said parts being yieldable radially to permit the can to roll over said spacing elements and into a space therebetween while rolling again-st said outer member.
2. In a machine for securing can ends to can bodies, a rotatable feeding member having thereon a plurality of can-engaging and spacing elements, and a relatively stationary outer can-engaging member serving as a can body guide and arranged substantially concentric with thepath of said spacing elements, said outer member having parts yieldable under the pressure of a can permitting the latter to rollover said spacing elements and into a space therebetween while rolling against said outer member.
A conveying apparatus for articles including. in combination, traveling timing and delivering means having spacing projections, yielding pressure means adapted to place each article in position to be conveyed by said timing and delivering means and means for advancing articles into engagement with and along said pressure means, the yielding pressure means being spaced from said projections so that an article can pass over said projections while acted on by the said pressure means. 7
4. A conveying apparatus for delivering filled cans to a closing machine including in combination, traveling timing and delivering means having spacing projections, pres sure means comprising a plurality of yielding members adapted to place said cans in position to be conveyed by saidtraveling means and means for advancing cans into engagement with and along the pressure means, the yielding pressure means being spaced from said projection-s so that an article can pass over said projections while acted on by the said pressure, means.
5. A conveying and timing apparatus for delivering filled cans to a closing machine including in combination, traveling timing fingers, a support adapted to receive the I filled cans promiscuously, and means cooperating therewith for placing the can-s against the timing fingers. said means including a plurality of yielding members arranged successively, said yielding members being opposed to the traveling timing fingers for forcing the cans into proper relation therewith.
6. A conveying and timing apparatus for delivering filled cans'to a closing machine including in combination, traveling timing fingers, a support adapted to receive the filled cans promiscuously, and means cooperating therewith for placing the cans against the timing fingers, said means in cluding a plurality of yielding members, said yielding members being opposed to the traveling timing fingers for forcing the cans into proper relation therewith, said yielding members being so constructed that the cans pass from one to another of said members. 7 7 Aconveying and timing apparatus for articles, comprising means having a moving bottom support for advancing said articles, means for spacing'and timing said articles and means cooperating with said spacing and timing means fordisposing said articles in proper traveling position.
8. A conveying and timing apparatus for delivering articles to a station to be operated upon, comprising a moving pathway having a moving supporting bottom, means traveling in unison with said pathway for spacing and timing said articles, and means cooperating with said spacing and timing means for disposing an article between two of said spacing and timing means.
V 9. A conveying apparatus for articles, comprising a traveling support having a moving supporting bottom, timingmeans engaging opposite surfaces of the articles conveyed, one of said means having spaced projections, the other of said means including yielding devices to force the articles into timed position between successive projections of the other means.
I 10. A conveying apparatus for articles, comprising a traveling support having a moving supporting bottom for advancing the articles through the apparatus, timing means for engaging the articles so advanced and aspring element for forcing said articles into engagement with the timing means, whereby the articles are partially rotated about the timing means into correct traveling position. j
11. A conveying and timing apparatus for articles, comprising means for advancing said articles, means comprising yielding elements for spacing and timing said articles and means cooperating with said spacing and timing means for retarding said articles and arranging them in proper traveling or der.
12. A conveying apparatus for articles including in combination traveling timing and delivering means, yielding pressure means adapted to place each article in position to be conveyed by said timing and delivering means and means for advancing articles into engagement with and along, said. pressure means.
18. A conveying apparatus for delivering filled cans to a closing machine including in combination, traveling timing and delivering means, pressure means comprsing a plurality of yielding members adapted to place said cans in position to be conveyedby said traveling means and means for advancing cans into engagement With and along the pressure means.
A conveying and timing apparatus for delivering filled ens to a closing machine including in combination, traveling timing lingers, a rotatable support adapted to receive the filled cans promiscuously, and
