Description

Oct. 18, 1927.
A, PITTELKOW CRACKER CAN Filed 001;. 15. 1922 HORNE? INYVENTO I y 2%;
Patented Oct. 18, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST PITTELKOW, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB- 'IO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CRACKER' CAN.
Application filed October 13, 1922. Serial No. 594,365,
My invention relates to an improvement in cover construction in a hinged cover can adapted particularly for they crackers and like material.
Cans of this character are ordinarily provided with flanged covers adapted to close the open end thereof and such covers have customarily been hinged to the container; body at the lower edge of the depending flange. It is obvious thatthis arrangement prevents turning the cover back at an angle of more than 180 from its normal position, since the flange then comes against the outer side wall and formsv a stop. Cans of this character are commonly arranged in close relationship for display purposes, and it is desirable that the cover be capable of being turned back against the vertical wall in order that the can may fit in the display rack, it being a common practice to provide a special transparent display cover upon the open top of the cans when they are so arranged.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide a cover construction which permits the cover to assume the position stated without sacrificing any of the features of advantage which have been attained in other covers, such as the strengthening of the flange by means of a wire disposed in the curled edge thereof.
It is also an object of the invent-ion to provide an improvement of this character without adding to the expense of manufacture, or materially altering the accepted form of container.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container in which my invention is embodied, the same being shown with the cover in closed posit-ion;
Fig. 2 is a perspective taken from the front and showing the cover in open position, but prior to its being swung down against the vertical wall of thebody; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective showing the cover in the position which it is permitted to as sume by the construction which I prov de.
For the purpose of illustrating the invenpackaging of.
tion, I have shown upon the drawings a cracker can comprising a rectangular body,
flanged and is hinged to the container in.
the plane of the top wall body, so that the cover may be turned completely back against the rear vertical wall of the can, as
shown in Fig. 3. The edges of the marginal flanges are curled, as indicated at 21, about a strengthening wire 22, which follows the rounded curvature of the rear ends of the flanges 16 and 17 and extends across the unflanged side of the cover, being enclosed in curled edges 23 and being preferably formed continuously along this side. Sa-id wire extends through and is rotatable 1n bearing members 241, which extend downwardly and are secured to the body of the container at 25 by means of solder, or in any desired manner. These members, together with the wire 22 which serves as a pintle, form the hinges by which the cover 14 is secured to the body, the wire, however, being guided by the flange construction to the plane of the top wall of the cover and the hinge formation, therefore, permitting the movement of said cover to the required 0- sition for arrangement of the cans in displhy racks, as heretofore stated.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A container for crackers and the like, comprising a rectangular body having an open end, and a hinged coveradapted to close said end and having depending flanges extending down along the sides and front of the body, a stiffening wire enclosedin the lower edges of said flanges and arranged in a plane below the plane of the top of the cover and extending thence upward, a -nd enclosed in upwardly extending curls of the cover flanges,to the higher plane of the rear edge of the cover and enclosed at intervals in said edge and exposed at intermediate intervals, and bearing members of the body enclosing said intermediate intervals ofthe wire at the upper edge of the rear part of said body.
2. A container for crackers and the like,
comprising a rectangular body having an open'end, and a hinged cover adapted to close said end and having depending flanges extending down along the sides and front of the body, a stiffeiiin wire enclosed in the lower edges of said fi anges and arranged in a plane below theplane of the top of the cover and extending thence upward to the higher plane of the rearedge of the cover extending; along said rear edge, and
bearing members of said body enclosinginte'rmediate intervals of the wire at the upper edge of the rear part of said body,vsaid wire being continuous along the. lower edges of the flanges'of the cover and along the rear edge of the top of the cover.
3. A container for crackers and the like, comprising a rectangular body having an open end, and a hinged cover adapted to close said end and having depending flanges extending down along the sides and front/of f the body, a continuous stiffener connected with the lower edges of'said flanges and arranged in a plane below the plane of the top of the cover and extending thence upward to the higher plane of the rear edge of the cover and connected with said rear edge, and
bearing members of the body enclosing portions of the stiffener at the upper edge of the rear part of said body and at the plane of the topof the body; I
