-*This invention relates to improvements' in the artof window regulators.
I It is` onepof the primary objects of. the invention to prov-ide a.I positive operating mechanism for a movable Window and a= cooperating positive loch to hold the parts in their adjusted'positions. y v
It is a further object to provide an intermittent lock of this character operable-by the controll handle for the window. n

Referring' to the details of the drawings there' are shown cert-ain portions of an automobile door` Sthe upper part of which includes awindow opening adapted to be closed by amovable window 10 when the latter is inf raised position. The" window may` be lowered into the window Well 12 by the construction hereinafter described, beR ing guided in such movement by means of the usualfwindow guides 14 mounted' in the frame part- 8. For the purpose'ofsuitably adjusting and looking the window inany of its operative positions. we provide the following mechanism. The position of the lug 44 is controlled by theV teeth 32 of the operating member in that the operating cam 46 is designed to be engaged by said teeth 32. The element is held in engagement with the member 30 by means of the spring member 48 preferably wound upon the pivotal shaft of said element and engaging over said element as indicated at 50.
The weight' of the window is counterbalanced by means of the spring 52 connected to the supporting plate as at 54 and to a remote point on the arm as at 56. This spring relieves the gears 30 and 36 and handle 18 of the weight of the window.
'Theoperation of the device is as follows. When it is desired to move the window tol a different position` the'operating handle V18 is rotated to a position such that one of the teeth 31 comes under the operating cam 46 44 from its position between the teeth 34 on the operated member 3,6'. Just prior to or as the locking element isfraised one of the teeth 32 engages a tooth of the operated member to move the same to a new position. The relation of the parts at the time the operatedmember 36 is unlocked and being moved is shown in Fig. 4 whereinthe operating member 30 is being moved clockwise as viewed in vsaid figure. Furtherrotation ofthe handle 18 and gear member 30 rotates theoperated member 36 counterclockwise. and releases the latching element 40 from the tooth 32, sothat the locking lug 44 drops between the next pairof teeth 34 on the element 36. The gear 30 can then be rotated a limited distance as will be seen from Fig. 3, without unlocking the gear member 36 for rotation butany rotation of the gear 30 sufficiently to cause engagement of the teeth-32 and 34, as seen in Fig. 4, causes one of the teeth to pass beneath the cam 46 to raise the locking element 40 to unlock the same permitting the operated member 30 to be moved. l
It will be seen that by this construction the arm 20 is normally held positively locked in its adjusted position and that it is only freed from such locked condition by a move- Vmentrof the operatinghandle 18 to release the locking element 40. `This operated element 36 is accordingly intermittently locked Vand unlockedv dependent upon the position `of the operating handle 18, its shaft 28 and the gear 30.

We claim as our invention:
1. In a device of the character described, a frame, a window slidable therein, means operatively Vconnected to said window for regulating the same, said means including a toothed operated member and a toothed operating member, the teeth vof said operated member and operating memberl beingl enmeshed to cause the former to be rotated by rotation of the latter, and means controlled by the teeth on said operating member for locking-said operated member against movement. t
2. In al window regulator, a toothed operated member, a'toothed operating member therefor mountedl in position to have the teeth thereof engage the teeth of said operated memberfor operating the latter from the former, and a locking element Vhaving means to engage and lock the teeth of said operated member against rotation, said element extending to and engaging said operating member and being controlled by the rotative movements of the latter.
3. In a window regulator, an operated member operatively associated with said window for moving thel'same, an operating member, means for causing said operated member to rotate with said operatingmember, said means including a lost motion connection permitting said operating member to rotate from a normal position relatively to said operated member, to a limited extent in either direction, locking means'for normally preventing rotation of said operated member, said locking means being rendered inoperative by movement of saidoperating member in either direction from a normal position. f
4. In a window regulator, a toothed rotatable operated member, a rotatable operating shaft, a toothed` rotatable operating member operatively connected thereto and adapted to mesh with the teeth on said operated member, the teeth of said operating member Vbeing spaced apart further than the teeth of said operated member to provide lost motion between said operating member and said operated member, and a locking` member extending to a position to engage said operating member to be operated thereby and adapted to lock said operated member against rotation'.
5. In a window regulator', a toothed rotatable operated member, va rotatable operating shaft, a lost motionV connection operatively connecting said operating shaft to said operated member,rand a locking member controlled by the rotation of said operating member and adapted to lock said operated member against rotation. 6. In a window regulator', a toothed rotatable operated member operatively associated with said window, a toothed rotatable operating member operatively connected to rotate said operated member, and movable to or from a. normal position relatively to said operated member, a looking dog including a part adapted to engage and look said operated member against rotation and a part adapted to engage said operating member to be Controlled thereby, said operating` member releasing said looking dog from said operated member when moved m either direction from
