UNITED STATES ROBERT G. CLYNE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINED PEN L1? AND POCKET CHECK PROTECTOR.
Application filed Auzunt 19, 1926. Serial No. 180,237.-
This invention relates to a new and useful combined pen-clip and pocket check-protector and has for its chief object the provision, as a new article of manufacture, of
6 a device of the kind and for the purposes stated which is simple, inexpensive, compact, and durable in form and structure and which is conveniently and efliciently usable in the performance of its intended functions.
And with the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafterdescribed and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is an enlarged perspective view of a combined pen-clip and pocket checkprotector embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, illustrated in operative pen-supporting position upon the pocket-piece of a garment;
Figure 3 is a detail transverse sectional view taken approximately on the line 3-3, Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse sec tional view approximately on the line 4-4, Figure 2. I
Referring now more in detail and by ref- 80 erence characters to the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, the main or body-portion A of my new combined pen-clip and pocket checkprotector is substantially of' inverted U-.
85 shape and is constructed of a suitably elongated section or strip of preferably light spring steel or other suitable material, arcuately bent and doubled upon itself intermediate its ends, as at 1, to integrally com- 40 prise and provide a joined or connected pair of co-operating approximately parallel legs 2. 3, transversely yieldable relatively to each other. To facilitate relative yielding movement of the legs 2, 3, and also to enhance the appearance of the finished article or device,
. the bend or bight 1 thereof is partly offset,
as shown.
Integral with the one leg 2 and located thereupon adjacent the bight 1, is an outwardly-presented pair of co-operating oppositely disposed somewhat resilient and preferably skeleton arcuate wings 4, 4. suitably spaced the one from the other at their free ends and of suitable normal diametrical dimension to receive and detachabl grip and hold an inserted pen B of stan ard or usual size and shape.
Adjacent its free end, the other leg 3 is further bent and recessed to integrally provide a so-called box-like or rectangular housmg whose end walls 5, 5, are resented outwardly approximately at rih and whose main or front wall 6 is approximately parallel with, the leg 3. And disposed within the recess provided by said housing and formed at 1ts op osite ends with trunnions 7 having a bearing for rotatlon in the housing end-walls 5, is a toothed, knurled, or otherwise surface roughened roller 8. Formed transversely in the opposite leg 2 for accommodating and cooperation with the teeth or projections of the roller 8 in check-protecting or cutting operations, is a series. of small slotted openings 9.
In use and operation, and as will be obv1ous from the disclosures here given, a pen B may be readily and conveniently engaged and supportingly gripped by the co-operatmg wings 4, 4, the pen. when so gripped and held, extending lengthwise of the device. The devlce as a whole may equally readily and conveniently. and either with or without a pen gripped and held thereby, be dis posed in straddling supported arrangement upon a garment or pocket-piece 10, as best shown in Figure 2, the roller 8 at its teeth or projectionsthen functioning or serving to bite, as it may be said, the pocket-piece 10 and thereby prevent surreptitious removal or accidental loss of the device. In protecting or cutting a check or other such paper or document, the device is preferably detached from the garment or pocket-piece 10, the check or other such paper placed between the roller 8 and the-body-leg 2, which latter then serves as a supporting base or platen, and the check and device relatively moved, when, in co-operation with the slotted openings 9 in the platen 2, the teeth or projections 'of the roller 8 function in suitably indenting or cutting and thereby protecting the check, as will be well understood. As will be noted, the wings 4, 4, at their base are also somewhat ofiset, as at 11, from the plane of the outer face of the bodyleg 2, so that a held or gripped pen B will be correspondingly supported away from t angles to,
the lane of the leg and interference thereby at the slotted openings 9 with the roller 8 "obviated. Preferably also the housing wall 6 is laterally enlar ed to convenient y receive finger or thum pressure in check protecting o tions.
It will be evident that, while not here specifically shown, my new device may be loosely carried in a pocket or otherwise attached 1 to the garment or pocket-piece, and it is to be understood that changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several arts of my new device may be made and su ituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and spirit of my invention.
thus described my invention. what I claim 'and desire to secure by Letters Pateat is: v
