HEEL BURNISHER.
application filed August 16, 1926. Serial No. 129,391.
This invention relates to burnishing devices consisting of aconical wheel having abradin paper attached thereto for the pur-, pose of immishing the breast of heels; and
6 my invention has for its. object the effecting of an improved means for attaching the paper to .the cone.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Fig. 1 is aside view of a heel burnisher embodying my inprovements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line 2-2 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a base view of the device. Fig. 4 is a base view partially opened for the application of the 5 abrading pa er. 7 p
. The spin le 1 is formed with a cylindrical head- 2 suitablyknurled for its convenient turning by hand, andhaving a conical recess 3 in its under face. Axially from the Q recess projects a terminally threaded bolt 4,
which may be integral'with the same or rigq idly attached thereto. v
, The two semi-cones 5 are recessed to fit about this bolt, and to enter the recess 3. Immediately below the parts 6 which enter the recess,'the semi-cones are externally reduced to leave an annularly conical space within which is located a sheet of cushioning material, preferably felt 7 'whose edges to abut at one of the division edges between the two semi-cones, the opposite. portion of the felt serving as a hinge in opening the cone for the application of the abrading paper.
The abrading paper 10 suitably cut to reach about the cone is fitted thereto, as
shown in Fi 3 and 4 the edges of the;
paper bein olded inward to be clamped in place by t e united semi-cones. For thus forcing the semi-cones together, the base of thelatter is recessed to leave a skirt 11 and a slightl conical annulus 12-; and a nut 13 is rovi ed for screwing upon the bolt 4 an havingan annular groove 14 adapted for engaging the annulus 12 and thereby having an annular groove in its upper surforcing the semi-cones firmly together at the base; the small end of the cone being simultaneously pressed together by the conical recess 3. I
Ordinarily it is unnecessary to forcibly turn the" nut 13, as the rotation of the head 2, and with it the bolt4, is enough to force the nut up into the required enga ment. By having the semi-cones formed with the sklrt 11, the felt and paper 7 10 are suitably supported thereby, while the nut 13 1s within the same and there is no danger of its interfering with the burnishing actlon on the breast of the heel being finished.
Thus made, the abrading paper is easily applied to the split cone, has no edges to be caught and torn, and gives a perfectly even surface to act upon the heel. At the same. time the 01d abrading papers canbe readily removed and fresh ones substituted.
What I claim as my inventionis:
In a heel buffer comprising a spindle having a cupped-headanda threaded bolt, a
conical body. in two diametrically separated parts whose upper portion fits in said cupped 1' ead, and yielding material surroundmgf;
the lower exterior of said body, the combination'ther'ewith of a nut screwing onto the lower end of said threaded bolt, said nut face, and the under end of said body havin an annular flange tapered exteriorly an engaged by said groove for drawing the two parts of said body together, the under surface of said body having a skirt desce'ndso ing to the level of the lower end of'said bolt, said yielding material descending to the'limits of said skirt, and abrading mate-- rial surrounding the periphery of said yielding -material.
In testimony that I claim the fore 0mg invention, I have hereunto set my han thls 14th day of August, 1926.
