My present invention relates to improve- Iii'ents iii high speed collecting cylinders adapted especially for use on printing presses in the operation of folding pr nted 5 sheets or Webs. The primary object of the invention is to iin'p'rove the construction of the cellecting cylinder as a Whole in order that it may revolve atconiparatively high speed and rapidly perform its required fiinctio'ns with efficiency. By the utiliza tioii of my invention inthe construction and operation of the collecting cylinder, a facile cooperation of the grippers and tucking blade are insured for folding the, sheet or Web and means are provided for relatively adjns'tiiig the position of the grippers and tucking blade to adapt the device for vari; ous purposes. In carrying out my invention I utilize a single set of grippers incliiding main and auxiliary grippers, and a complementary tucking blade. The grippers and tucking blade are carried by different elements" of the collecting cylinder Wherebythe position of the set of grippers may be changed With relation to the tticking blade in adapting the collecting cylinder to var'ioii's, sizes, or lengths of paper sheets or Webs to be folded.
In the preferred form of the invention I rise a hollow printing press cylinder 1, which as shown in Figiir'e' 1 is foreshortened for convenience of illustration the right of its center line] The cylinderis' fashioned with end heads 2 and 3 and at suitable intervals on its eriphery is provided with annular ribs as 4- for contact with. the sheet or of paper that is to be grasped by the grippers as the collecting cylinder rotates or revolves at high speed. At the exterior of the cylinder ends are provided a pair of circular adjusting plates or disks 13 and 14 of complementary construction and provided with exterior hubs 15 loose on the shaft 5. By means of three spaced clamp bolts 16 for each plate the latter are secured at the ends of the cylinder to from a rigid construction, of which the cylinder and plates comprise the collecting cylinder. The clamping bolts 16 which bind the plates to the cylinder have washers 16 and pass through arcuate slots 17 in'the plates. The three bolts are spaced at suitable intervals about the center of the plate and are threaded into complementary bolt holes in the ends 2 and 3 of the cylinder. The bolts in addition to clamping or binding together the blades and cylinder, co-act with the slots of the plates to guide the latter when they are being turned or adjusted on the shaft with relation to the cylinder. WVhen the bolts are loosened and the plates otherwise freed from the cylinder the plates may be turned on the shaft 5 with a simultaneous movement to adjust the grippers which are carried by the plates with relation to the tucking blade that is carried by the cylinder intermediate of the plates.
For this adjustment I utilize a pair of rack wheels or pinions 18 fixed on the ends of a shaft 19 which extends longitudinally through the cylinder and is journaled in the end walls thereof. The ends of this adjusting'shaft project through the cylinder walls and also through a pair of arcuate slots 20 in the adjacent plates 13 and 14;. One end of the shaft as 21 is squared in order that it may accommodate a tool or wrench and by means of the tool the shaft may be turned manually to turn the rack wheels.
Each adjusting plate on its outer face has affixed thereto a segmental rack or toothed plate 22 of suitable length for co-action with the respective rack wheels. and it will be apparent that, when the plates are loosened with respect to the cylinder, the two end plates may be turned on their centers with relation to the cylinder by the co-action of the rack wheels and segmental racks 22.
A pair of diametrically arranged brace bars 23 which extend'longitudinally through the cylinder are passed through arcuate slots 24 in the end walls of heads of the cylinder. The ends of these brace bars are anchored in the respective end plates 13 and 14 by means of bolts 25 which pass through the slots 24 and are threaded into the threaded socket ends of the brace bars. These brace bars which add rigidity and stabilityto the col lecting' cylinder as a whole, are of course loosened when the adjusting plates are to be adjusted.
The collecting cylinder is equipped with twoseries of grippers forming a co-acting set of which 26 indicate the auxiliary series and 27 the main series of grippers. The elements 26 and 27 are flat metallic plates of the required resiliency and fashioned to proper shape or form for theperformance of their functions. They are carried by the 7 end plates of the collecting cylinder for coaction with the pad-bar 28 and the web or paper is gripped by these membersas indicated in full lines Figure 6 and dotted lines Figure 5. The pad-bar is also carried by the adjusting plates and is interposed between them and secured rigidly thereto by means of stud bolts 29 on the ends of the pad-bar that extend through bolt holes in the plates, and clamp nuts 30 onthe outer sides of the plates secure the pad bar in position. Pins or screws 29 may also be passed through the adjusting plates from the outside to engage the ends of the pad-bars to insure rigidity after they are accurately adjusted to position. i
The paper sheet or web of course is grasped or gripped between the set of grippers or fingers and the outer face of the pa bar which is approximately flush with the periphery of thecylinder, and as the cylinder rotates the paper is carried around by the cylinder for further,manipulation by the tucking blade after the paper has been released from the grippers i The two'series of grippers forming the set are carried on a pair of parallel rock shafts 31 and 32 which extend longitudinally through the cylinder, the end walls and body of the cylinder being cut away or cut out as at 33 to accommodate the gripper-mechanism; The grippers or clamping fingers are bolted or otherwise secured on split blocks 34 that encase the shafts and one ofthe securing bolts, as 35 for each gripperis used for clamping the split block on its shaft. It will readily be seen that the grippers, through the blocks, may be adjusted both longitudinally and circumferentially on their rock shafts to the required operative position. The grippers are spaced apart at regular intervals along the rock shafts as indicated in Figure 1 to suit various conditions.
The two rock shafts are located in the opening of the cylinder and are journaled at their ends in the two adjusting plates 13 and 14. These rock shafts are actuated at regular intervals tocause the. grippers. to grasp the paper sheet or web in combination with the pad-bar, and an actuating cam, (not shown) or other suitabledevice is provided at each end of the collecting cylinder toco-act with tripping mechanism for this purpose. The shafts at opposite ends project through the adjusting plates and a trip lever, as 36 and 37 is fixed to each projecting end oft-he shafts by means of a hub or boss 38 located at the outer sides. of the plates. Each lever carries a roller as 39 for engagement with an actuating cam and the move,
ment of the levers is guided and controlled by means of a rod as 40, 40. These rods are pivoted at 41 on one arm of a lever and the rods are suitably fitted to slide in an opening 42 of a fixed guide lug 43 that is screwed into each end plate in proper position. 36 are fixed to the plates in the path of movement of the levers to limit excessive movement thereof.
In some instances I may use end plates having gear teeth on their peripheries in lieu of the smooth edges of the plates 13 and 14. In the modification indicated in Figure 7 a portionof such a plate is indicated at 44 having teeth 45 on its periphery for co-action with the jaw cylinder 46 which is fashioned with peripheral gear teeth 47. The tucking blade 48 and the jaws 49 of the jaw cylinder are indicated in dotted lines for co-acting in folding the sheet or web of paper.
It will be understood that the grippers are released at a predetermined point accordingto the size of the sheets of paper being collected and control of the release is under the action of the cams which co-operate with the rollers 31 on the two levers. The release Stop pins usually takes place when the transverse center line of the sheet in alinement with the tucking blade and jaws of the jaw cylinder as in Figure 7. At this time the sheet is given What may be its first fold.
Havingthus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a hollow cylindrical body having a cut-out portion and its rotatable shaft, of an adjustable end plate and means for clamping it to said body, co-acting means carried by said body and plate for relatively adjusting the latter, gripper mechanism located in said out out portion and a tucking blade carried by said body.
2. A collecting cylinder having a tucking blade and a gripper mechanism and means for relatively adjusting these members, said collecting cylinder including a body and adjustable end plates, clamping bolts for binding said plates to said body and brace bars extending longitudinally through said cylinder and affixed to said plates.
