Description

Sept. 27, 1927. l643409 S. FREEMAN GARAGE Filed April 5. 1925 Patentecl Sept. 27, 1927.
UNITED STTES SOLL FREEMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLIIN'OIS.
GARAGE.
Application flled April 5, 1926. Serial No. 99,700.
My invention relates to ga1 ages.
One o'f the objccts of n1y mventmn 1s to provide a stol'age arrangement for garages which will n1ake it easy to get the cars 1nto and out cf their storage space quickly and without lanmge or injury to the ca r.
A further objcct ot' my invent1on 1s to provide a garage arrangement in wh ich the (als can be readily n1ovecl from the1r storn space to a washing space provided, W1thout tl1e necessity of starting the car o1 movin;{ it undcr its oWn power, thereby materially suving gasoline und wear and tear 011 the cm.
A further objcct of my invention is to provi le a construction which Will facilitate the nmking of mino1 repairs, enabling them to be made without running the car under its O\Vll PO\VGI.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved heating arrangement for garages.
Furthcr objects Will appear from the desuliption und clai1ns. In the following, m which an embodiment of rny invention is illustrated,
Figure l ls a diagrammatic skectional plan view showing part of a garage arranged in accordance with rny invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section substantially 011 tl1e line 22 of Fig. 1, and
F ig. 3 is a detail view showing the ramp arrangement.
Referring to the drawings in detail as shown in Fig. l, the floor plan of the garage is divided into parallel driving lanes 1 with an entrance and exit at each end of each lane, and with storage space 2 on each side of eacl1 lane. In practice the driving lanes Will be about 9 ft. wide and the storage strip on eacl1 side of each laue will be about 6 ft. wide. A transversely movable float or eatriage 3 is provided for each car, these floats l1aving wheels 3 traveling on tracks 4 extending transversely of the driving laues and into tl1e storage space at the sides cf the driving lanes. Bach float is provided with a l1inged ramp 5 at each end to faeilitate driving onto and ofi from the float. The surface cf each float may be about 6" above the surface of the driving lane. Each carriage 01' float on one side of the driveway lies directly opposite a carriage on the opposite side of the driveway and each pair of tl1ese oppositely disposed carriages travels on the same sei; cf tracks. I have shown th1ee tracks o1 rails for each pair of Carriages or floats, one rail being located undervents any undue strain 011 the carriages.
As shown in Fig. 3, the l'oldable ramps are so arranged that when two adjacent Carriages a1e pulled out into the driveway so that tl1ey lie end t0 end, tl1e ramp cf one carriage Will 1t'0ld down 011 top olf the 1amp of the other carriage so as to lie in substantially horizontal position and form in efiect a brige between the two carriages, so that in case of emergency, if it should be desired to get all of' the cars out 0f the garage quickly, the ca1's could be driven directly frorn one caniage on to another and thus 011 down tl1e driveway and out of the garage.
The t'act that the rarnps oan be folded down 011 top cf the platform when the platl'or1n is in the storage space results ina couservation 015 the storage space, as otherwise, if the ramps could not be folded up, additional storage space would be required for these ramps.
In the normal use of the garage, anyone wishing to store bis car drives down the laue to the space allotted to him where bis carriage or float is pulled out on its tracks so as to be in the middle of the driving laue. He then drives bis car onto this float, throws 011 the brakes, folds up the ramp and then shoves the float to the storage space at the side of the driveway. The ramp at the farther end Of the carriage during this operation is folded up on topof tl1e fioat and may act as a stop to prevent the driver from driving off the farther end of the float. Each float is at least as long as the wheelbase of a car and is preferably about 15 ft. long, long enough to accommodate the largest cars.
The platform is substantially co-extensive with the car stored thereon and provides a convenient support for a mechanic in making minor repairs on the car, enabling him to work with ease on any part of the car without coming in contact Wit-h the dirt and grease on the garage floor.
In this arrangement it Will be seen that the cars may be quickly and compaetly stored, and there is no danger of one car bumping into another and thus injuring the fenclers, etc.
A w-ater supply line is provided on each sldle 0f eacl1 rlrlvlng; lan@ in lthe fo1*m aal? am extension l1ose 6 tl1@ l00ps 0l wlaich am supportecl by pulley carriages 'l runnlng an a track. With this arranmament the nozzle 8 can be brought to any esired part oft the driving lane so that any car can be pulled out 0n its float into the middle of the driving lane and there washed without the necessity of moving the car under its own power with the resultant Wem anal tear on the car and consmnption of gasoline.
A heating supply line 9 1 s also provided. extending parallel and along side each lane and between tw0 rmvs 0f ca1s so that rows 0f cars can be kept warm by a single pipe line and freezing prevented.
Vhile I have described but one embodlment of my invention, it is obvious that xnany modifivations therein may occur t0 those skilled in the art, and I desire, therefore, t-hat my invention be limited only by the scope 0f the appended claims and by tl1e prior art.
