ELMER RICH, 33., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN FOUNDRY EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OE NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OHIO.
SAND-BLAST APPARATUS.
Application filed January 20, 1919, Serial No. 271,965. Renewed July 28, 1924.
Myr invention relates to sand blast apparatus by which a sand blast may be employed v or cleaning or otherwise treating castings or other articles.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical construction of sand blast apparatus.
A further object of the invention is to secure thoroughness and efficiency by causl ing all sides of the articles to be treated.
' Another object of the invention is to permit ready access to the articles under treatment, to permit their removal and replacement, and to permit their handling for various purposes.
A still further object of the invention is to permit the quick and ready introduction of thearticles into the apparatus for treatment and also the quick and ready removal of the same therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to accomplish the foregoing and other desirable results in a simple and expeditious manner. I
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a sand blast apparatus embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same on line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
The sand blast apparatus shown comprises a housing 1 preferably made of metal or other suitable material. This housing provides a room or chamber in which articles to be treated are placed. Said housing 1' is conveniently made with vertical sides 1 sloping top sections 22, and a chimney or outlet portion 3 extending upwardly from the members 2-2 and forming a chimney or outlet 4 for the escape of flying dust and dirt. The side members 2-2 are provided with panes 5 of glass .or other transparent material which are preferably laid at an inclination, so that the operator may see'the interior of the room or chamber. Within the housing 1 is a truck'7 having Wheels, 88 which are mounted on tracks 9-9 at the bottom or floor of the housing. This truck 7 supports the articles which are to be treated, one such article 10 being shown mounted on said truck.
The truck 7 is of a length substantially equal to the length of the housing so that when said truck is in position its ends are at the ends of the housing, as shown in Fig. 1. Said truck 7 is preferably prothe truck 7. The hose may be moved 'vided with upwardly extending ends 11,
which form end walls for the housing when said truck is in position therein. Thus the end walls of the truck 7 close or substantially close the otherwise open ends of said housing.
The sides of the housing are provided with swinging doors 1212 mounted on hinges 1313 at the ends of'the housing, so
that said doors maybe swung in and out to open and close the sides of said housing. Above the doors 12 there are openings or slots 14: which are equipped with strands 15 of rubber or like'material forming curtains. Thus a hose with a sand blast nozzle may be pushed through the curtains 15 and caused to operate upon castings restin on 4.
7 back and forth within the openings or slots 14 so as to cause the sandto act upon various parts of the article'and said hose may be used on each side of the apparatus, that is inserted through the slots or openings 14 on the opposite sides of the apparatus.
Thus the sand blast may-be applied to practically all sides andthe top of said article or articles. At any time during the treatment, the operator may open either one or both of the doors 12 on either or both sides of th housing and move or shift the article or articles under treatment so as to place it or them in any desireddifi'erent position or positions. Thus a thorough and complete treatment of the. articles may be accomplished, and this without any movement or change in the apparatus itself.
For thus treating .the articles, a flexible hose 16 having a nozzle 17 is shown. The
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without depart ing from the spirit of the invention.
