ARCHIE S. AVERY, OF TWO "RIVERS, WISCONSIN.
BAND-SAW nnnssnn.
Application filed November 4, 1926. Serial no. mazes. V i
.This invention .relates to. a' band-saw dresser, and has for its object to improve and simplify the construction and operation of tools ofthe character referred to so as to be reliable and eflicient in its use, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, conveniently operated, and so designed that. the jointing or evening of the saw teeth isaocomplished automatically as the saw is moved through thetool.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel, construction, combination and arrangement .of parts as hereinafter"more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment ofthe invention, butit ispto be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
F 1 is atop plan view of a band-saw dresser, in accordance with this invention, and showing the adaptation thereof in connectionwith'a saw.
Fig. 2 is'a. section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device.
' Fig. 4 is a section on line 4t Fig. 2.
' A-band saw dresser, in accordance with this invention, hereinafter termed a tool comprises a rectangular body portion 1 havingextended from its inner face 2, a right angular extension 3, which is flush with one end of-the body portion 1. The extension 3 is of the same width as the width of the body portion 1. The thickness of the extension 3 is of'less than half the length of the bodyv portion 1. Preferably the height of the extension 3 is, greater than, the height of'the bodyportion 1. 'The inner face of the body portion, from thatend free of the extension 8 to the latter and at each side marginal portion thereof, is formed with a the body portion 1 opposite the end provided wlththe extension Sis formed with a countersunk portion 7 which surrounds the outer end of the socket 6. The socket 6 is of less length than the length of that part of'the body portion 1 whichisfree of the extension 3. The body portion 1, ata point between the inner end of'the socket 6 and the inner face of the extension 3, or rather at a point between the innerend of the socket 6 and the transverselnedian of the body portion 1, is provided with a socket 8,
which is disposed'at right angles to the I socket 6 and opens at the inner face 2 of thebody portion 1 The wall of the socket 8 is threaded.
The inner face to provide a lengthwise extending groove 9 which is coextensive with said inner face,
and has its upper wall positioned in proximity to the top of the, extensionj3 and its lowerwall in close proximity to the point of joinderof the extension 3 with the:body portion 1, Mounted in the groove 9, as well as being of the same width and length as ofthefextension is incut said groove 9, is a file 10. The extension 3 r is. provided with a plurality of I binding screws 11 for fixedly securing the file 10 within the, groove 9.
' Slidably mounted onthe body portion 1, is a carrier 12 and which comprises a body portion 18 having its length the same as the width of the body portion 1, and said body portion 13 has its inner face formed with a groove 14 for the reception of the tongue flush with the sides 'of the body portion .1. The inner face of the body portion 13,
is formed with a groove 15 which extends from end to end thereof, and has its top wall positioned in proximity to the outer "5.- The ends ofthe body portion13 are 7 face of the carrier 15 and its bottom wall arranged in proximity to the inner face'of the carrier 13, The groove 15 is coextensivewith the inner face of the carrier 15 and is adapted to have .mountedtherein a file 16,
coextensive with the groove 15 and the carrier. 12 is provided with ,bindingusorews 17 v for fixedly securing the file 1 6 within the groove 15.
which opposes the file 10. The file 16 is 8' The carrier :12 between its longitudinal median and its inner face thereof is formed with i an oblong opening 18 whichextends from; theouter to the innerface of the carrier 12. Theouter part ofthe-op'ening 18, M
is of greater size than the remaining part thereof, and that part of the opening 18 01' greater size is indicated at 19. The socket 8 cylindrical and registers with the 1nner end of the oblong opening 18.
The carrier 12, intermediate its outer and inner faces is formed with a transversely ex tending opening 20 which communicates at its inner end with the opening 18 and at its outer end opens at the outer side face of the carrier 12. The wall of the opening 20, at the outer terminal portion thereof is provided with threads 21. Slidably mounted in the openin 20 is a spring controlled plunger 22. having a reduced shank 23. Engaging with the threads 21, is an abutment positioned in the outer portion of the opening 20 and interposed between the abutment 24c and the plunger is a coiled spring 25, or 'ather the controlling spring 25 for the plunger The spring 25 surrounds the reduced shank d3 of the plunger. The plunger 522, spring 25 and abutment 24; constitutes means for shifting the carrier 12 outward ly, when the latter is released in a manner to be presently referred to.
Extending through the opening 18 and engaging with the threaded wall of the socket 8 is a headed screw 26 and the head thereof is indicated at 27, and which is positioned in the enlarged portion of the opening 18. The shank of the screw 26. extends through the smaller portion of the opening 18. The plunger abuts against the shank of the screw. 26, and when in such position the tension of the spring 95 is increased. The carrier 12 is locked from shifting, with respect to the body portion 1, by a threaded retain ing member 28, which is in the form of a threaded shank, provided with a disk like head 28 of greater diameter than the shank and with tlie head 29 formed with a wing piece 230 to facilitate the shifting of the memher 28. The head 29 overlaps the carrier 12 and when it bears against said carrier 1:2, the latter is prevented from being shifted by the spring 25. Vvhen the member 28 is withdrawn from the socket 6, said 11'1G1l1l301 having threaded engagement with the wall of the socket (5, the carrier 12 will be shifted outwardlv on the body portion 1 due to the action of the spring in connection with the plunger 22 and with the latter abutting against the shank of the screw 26.
The saw is indicated at 31 and is interposed between the files 10 and 16, see Figures 1 and 2. hen the carrier 12 is shifted outwardly with respect to the body portion, the saw 31 can be readily positioned between the files 10 and 15.
hen using the tool, the saw is positioned on a bench with teeth pointing upward and backward, after which the tool is adjusted for the purpose of mounting in it the saw. hen the tool is mounted on the saw, the
carrier 12 is latched or locked to prevent the outward shifting thereof on the body poi:- tion 1. \Vhen the tool has been positioned on the saw the latter is ma rhed at the starting point thereon and the saw is pulled around through the tool with the teeth pointing backward the opposite direction from which the saw runs, and when the saw is pulled around to the maria the carrier is closed a little more with respect to the saw and the operation is repeated about three or four times until the desired result is obtained. The saw is then sharpened in the usual 'ay and is then ready for smooth sawing.
it is thought that the many :ulvautages of a. tool in accordance with this inventioii can be readily understood and although the preferred embodiment of the invention as illustrated and described, yet it to be understood that changes in the details of construction ca be had which will fall with in the scopcof the invention as claimed.
