This invention relates to power mechanism such as is used for actuating a typewriter or similar machine. In such mec nism it has been proposed to use a constantly driven rotary member or roller, and to connect each type-barwith a cam, or other device, adapted to co-operate with the power roller when released by one of the keys of the machine.
The present invention relates particularly to the connecting devices interposed between the type-bar, or other element which is to be actuated, and the cam-unit or equivalent part which actuates it. The object of the invention is to roduce a simple and readily accessible device by which the connections inquestion may be accuratel adjusted and by which the adjustment wi 1 be automatically maintained. To the foregoing ends the invention consists in the structure hereinafter described, as it is defined in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a side-elevation of power mechanism embodying the presentinvention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side-elevation showing the adjustable connecting devices in section. Figs. 3 and 4 are bottom views ofthe parts shown in Fig. 2, in different positions.
The invention is illustrated as used in connection with power mechanism in which a cam 5 is journaled in a lever which is mounted on a stationary pivot 6. The cam co-operates with a power-driven roller 7, 'the cam-lever is connected with the typemechanism or any other part of the machine which is to be actuated, by means of a pullrod 8. The cam-mechanism is thrown into operation by means of one of the key-levels 9 of the machine.
The operation of the cam is controlled by a stop-lever 10 articulated-with the key-lever as shown in Fig. 1. Since the details of this cam-mechanism and of its mode of opera tion are not involved in the present invention, they need not be further described herein, but it will be understood that when the key-lever is depressed the cam is permitted to engage the power-roller and thus to swing the cam-lever in a direction to pull on the pull-rod 8.
The structure embodying the present invention is shown particularly in Figs. 2, 3, I
. ends, to receive a pivot 15 which has reduced ends 16 loosely engaging the perforations. The pivot 151s bored vertically .to receive a shank 17, which is fixed in the lower end of a sleeve 18. The sleeve is screw-threaded to enga e the screw-threaded lower end of the u -rod 8. At the lower end of the shan 17 is a polygonal head 19 provided with a slot to receive a screw-driver.
In the normal position of'the parts, as shown in Fig. 3, the arms 11 rest against two flat sides of the head 19 and prevent the head and the sleeve 18 from turnmg accidentally. The pivot 15 is free to rock with respect to the arms 11, and thus affords a pivotal con-' nection for the lower-end of the pull-rod. If it be desired to adjust the normal position of the arms up or down, to correct the clearance between the cam 5 and the roller 7, this ma be done by inserting a screwdriver in t e slot in the head 19 and turning this head in one direction or another, thus causing the sleeve 18 to screw up or down on the pull-rod. When the head is so turned its angles force the arms 11 slightly apart, as shown in Fig. 4, but owing to their resiliency, they return again so as to press a ainst the flat sides of the head in its final y adj usted position.
Among other advantages of this adjustable connection is the fact that it is accessible from beneath, which is the most convenient direction of access to mechanism of the kind in question, and the further fact that the use of the two arms 11 involves no increase int-he cost of the mechanism, since the cam-lever must in any case be made of two parallel members of sheet-metal.
