Application filed. March 26, 1925. Serial No.'18,399%;
This invention relates to ii'nprovements in clips for supporting magazines or other like articles, as several sheets of papers which it of the'fixed jaw, whereby the are through which the movable gripping aw moves into its open position creased. b I
A turther object is to provide a fiat or lea spring" which is located between the jaws of the clip and which spring is formed with integral pivot projections on its opposite side edges which enter the pivot openings of the ears. The fixed jaws is to med with a hoot-shaped extension for supporting or hanging the magazine or other ar ticle. The hook further serves as a support so for the first or second finger for the user and the thumb for depressing the movable jaw. These and other objects will appear int-he body of the specification and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is perspective view of the clip shown supporting a magazine.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the clip with the jaws in a closed position.
Fig. 3 is a side view with the movable aw in an open position.
Fig. i is a sectional view on the line 1 t of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the flat or leaf spring showing the pivots and Fig; 6 is a perspective View of a spring formed from wire.
Referring to the drawings in detail:
1 designates a supporting rod or line, 2
the fixed plate number having the hook extension 3, a the upturned jaw portion that is formed with teeth on its upper edge. 6 and 7' are the oppositely located upturned ivot ears that are'inte 'ral with the late P e I l 18 very materially inc be clamped together.
interposed between the upper and lower plate members 10 and 2, and between the ears is 'a flat or leaf spring Tie-that is bent intermediate its endsat 16 to form the upper and lower end portions 17 and 18 which, as shown, rest against and engage theinner surfaces ofthe plate members 10 and 2. .19 and 20 designate oppositely located integral projections on the side ed es of the portion 18 ot the spring 15. These integral projections serve as the common pivots which are located in the openingsS and 9 ot the ears 6' and 7 and in theopenings 11 and 12 of the ears 11 and 12, whereby the spring 15 serves the double purpose of normally retaining the jaws 4t and 13 of the plate members 2 and 10 closed, and providing pivots for these twomembers.
By reason of the ears 11 and 12 or" the movable plate 10 being very much longer than the ears 6 and 7 off the are or angle through which the upper plate 10 can .be moved is materially increased. lhis is clearly shown in 3 by the wide space between the jaws aand 13, whereby a thick magazine or large'number of papers may A clamped magazine is indicated in F ig'. 1 at 21. This wide opening of the jaws is accomplished by reason of tliefact that the openings in the two sets of cars are spaced or located different dis tances from the upper and lower plate members, or, in other wordst-he ears 11 and 12 are longer than the ears 6 and 7 thus providing greater lever action and a wide opening between the meshing jaws.
Fig. 6 illustrates a spring that is formed of wire which is bent on itself at- 22 and having the upper parallel portions 23 and 24, the return bends at 25 and 26, the lower parallel portions 27 and 28 and the pivot end portions 29 and 30 01" the end extensions 31 and The pivots 29 and 30 ent r the aligned openings of the ears in the same manner as the projections 19 and 20 of the leaf spring 15. The upper and lower parallel portions 23 and 2%, and 27 and 28 en gage the inner surfaces of the plates 10 and 2 as already described in connection with Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4c- Further it should be particularly observed that the upper and lower plate members are each provided with a handle portion; indicated at 3 and 14; whereby, when these portions are gripped the jaws may be opened. Jlhe lower member 2 is, in practice, not morable, it is gripped by the operator. The member 10 is the movable one.
What we claim is:
1. An article holding clip comprising in combination, an upper and lower plate member, each having integral upturned jaw portions, which engage, each member having integral oppositety extending ears with openings therein, which register with each other,
' a spring located between the plate members and having extensions on its opposite edges which extensions are located in the registering openings 01 the ears of the said members to pivot-ally connect the members together, the ears of the upper member being substantially longer than these of the lower memher and the pivot openings in the ears of the upper member being located a greater distance from its plate than are the'pivot openings of the lower nember, whereby when the upper member is operated the will be widely separated.
An article holding clip comprising in combination, an upper and lower plate member, each having integral upturned jaw por tions, which engage, each member having in the upper member being located a greater distance from its plat-e than are the pivot openings of the lower member, the upper member having an upwardly extending rear end portion and the lower member having a downwardly extending curved or hook-portion, whereby when the upper member is operated the jaws will be widely separated.
