CHARLES H, OHLSSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO DAVID HEFTER AND RAY HEFTER, COMPOSING THE FIRM OF HEFTER & COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WEB NOTCHING AND BLANKING MECHANISM FOR OUTSIDE COVERS.
Application filed April 29, 1926. Serial No. 105,429.
This invention relates. to machines for applying glue to a. continuous roll of paper, cloth, leather or the like and then cutting same into blanks of a predetermined size.
The main object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character adapted to have a roll of paper cloth, leather or the like mounted at the rear thereof, and draw the material on said roll over a glue applying roller, thence under a trimming die to have same trimmed, and then out into blanks of a predetermined size.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a blanking means adapted to so form the corners of the blanks as to avoid the necessity of trimming the said corner after the blank is pasted and folded over a form of cardboard-or other material to'be used as a box cover or the like. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety device for such a machine to prevent any injury to the hands or fingers of the operator when cutting such blanks.
Other objects and novel features of my invention will be fully described as the specification proceeds.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is side view in elevation of a machine embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the front portion of the machine showing the trimming die and blanking means, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view of a portion of one of the. trimming dies. 2
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 indicates a roller mounted on a shaft 6 journaled in depending bracket members '7 secured to bars 8 forming horizontal frame members supported at the rear on upright legs 9 and on intermediate supporting brackets 10 secured to a bed plate 11 supported on legs 12. A continuous web 13 of paper, leather, cloth or the like upon the roll 5 passes between a plurality of rods 14; on an adjustably mounted frame 15 adapted to act as a slack take up means and thence over the peripheral surface of a roller 16 journaled in bearings 17, said roller 16 being partly immersed in a pot 18 containing glue. The web 13 continues to pass under and over slack takeu rods 19 and 20-adjustably mounted on the ars 8 and thence through a trimming die 21 comprising V shaped cutters 22 and die plates 23 having openings 24 conforming to the shape of the cutters 22. Guide members 25 secured to upright housings or blocks 26 through which the cutters are guided when actuated to move up and down to form notches 27 in the web 13 act as a backing for the side edges of the said web when the notches are cut in same. Cams 28 mounted on a shaft 29 journaled in bearings 30 of brackets 31 secured -to the bed plate 11 and having cam grooves 32 in which cam rollers 33 revolvably mounted on levers 34;. secured to a shaft 35 journaled in brackets 36 on the bed plate 11, operate'torock the levers 34 thus actuating the cutters 22 in an up and down vertical direction by means of connecting links 37 associated at one end to the lever 3-and at the opposite ends'to ears 38 on a T shaped member 39 which passes through slots 40 in upright posts or rods 41 integral with or secured to the cutters 22. The posts 41 are guided in the housin 26, and the T shaped member 39 is guided by means of a depending projection 42 projecting into a bracket 43 secured to the bed plate 11. The distance between the dies may be adjusted by moving the housing 26 inwardly or outwardly on the member 39 and then fasten same to the bed plate 11. A foot lever 45 fast to a shaft 46 loosely journaled in a bracket 47 extending inwardly from the legs 12 when depressed against the tension of a spring 48, will .rock a lever 49 on the shaft 46 and will release a clutch 50 by means of a connecting rod 51 connected at one end to the lever 49 and on its other end to a clutch lever 52 pivoted on a stud 53. The clutch is normally held out of running engagements with a driving pulley 54 by the action of a spring 55 pulling on the outer end of the lever 52. a
The depression of the foot lever 45 will draw down a knife 58 running across the machine and-fastened to arms 59 secured to a shaft 60, upon which is also mounted an arm 61 connected to one end of a link 62, the other end of which being connected to the foot lever 45. The shaft is journalled in brackets 63 secured to the frame members 8. A plate 65 secured at its ends to the brackets 63 coacts with the knife 58 to shear a blank 66 from the web 13 when the said knife is fully drawn down. By placing the center of the notches 27 on the from; edge of the plate 65, the exactlength of the 'blank 66 Will be determined.
The mechanism just described isalways under; the control, of! the operator, inasmuch as it is notpermanently connectedtogtl e ld bing the hand over same after the said blanks are severed from th eeb"13 .v It Will be seen from Figure 2 ofthe drawings.- that the trimmlng d1es21, in cutting the notches *27, in the webl will provide theblanks 66 With-beveled-corners'YO, so 'thatwvhenth-e edges 71 are pasted to the-underside ofthe forms 69, in a? lateroperation no; excess material will protrude, thus forming -a neat joint at the corners.
-- From the-foregoing. itwvillbe'seenthat I have provided a machine. in Which-a roll. ofpaper, cloth, leather orthe-like is; mounted, the said material being adapted to be drawn over a glue applying roller. and thence between a set of adjustable idiesto chine, securedto 831d arms. a=fixed plate predetermined POSltlOILllIIGlfitlOH to said notch the said material, to form beveled corners, Whenthe material is cut into blan {S by a cutting mechanism. at all times under the control of the operator. .1 have also provided a table .at;the front ofthemachine,
Where the operator may paste the blank to a formadapted. tobe .used asa book cover, paper box cover, or the like.
l lavi-ng deseribed my invention, What I claim as new, is
1. Inamachine adapted to'havc aweb fed therethrough, a die adapted to cut -.notches along the edges ofsaid- 8 0, operating-means forthe said notch'ing die,- ablank cuttlngmechanism. and-blank cuttingmechanism operatinglneans releasablyassociated With the notching d e operating means.
2. In amachine adapted to have-a Web "fed therethrough, a -"die a'dapted'to cutnotc-hes along the-edges'of-saidweb. means for open ating the dies, die operating actuating means, blank cutting =means, comprising a :shaftrevolvably mounted in the 'ma arms on 'SELICl shaft. a'knife blade knife blade. and means E for releasably operating said knife blade in relation -to the die operating actuating means.
