GAS HEATER.
Application filed January G, 1927. Serial No. 159,444.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in heaters, and particularly to heaters which use illuminating gas.
One object ot the invention is to provide a device which is simple in construction, and which is durable and elective in use.
Another object is to provide a device oit' this character wherein the gas is more properly mined with air, with the result that more perfect combustion is produced, and the maximum of heat radiated with the minimum amount of gas consumed.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a gas heater made in accordance with the present invention, the burner mechanism being in elevation.
Figure 2 is a similar sectional view, but showing the interior mechanism in section.
Figure 8 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 8 3 or" Figure 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a suitable casing having the upper and lower flanged walls 11 and 12, the Aformer ot which has a central opening 13, while the latter has a central opening 14. ln one side of the said casing 10, adjacent the upper end, is an opening 15, to which reference will be made later herein. Disposed vertically and ceng trally within the casing 10, and having its upper and lower ends disposed respectively through the openings 13 and 111, and ei:- ternally threaded, is a pipe 16. 1n one side of the upper end of the pipe 16 are formed transverse slots 16 at which the gas is adapted to burn, as will be explained later herein. Formed in the side of the pipe 16, adjacent the upper end, and in horizontal alinement with the opening 15, of the easing, is a threaded opening 17, ot comparatively small diameter, and screwed into said opening 17 is a horizontal pipe 18, which projects toward the opening 15, and is perforated throughout its length. In the lower portion of the pipe 16, below the opening 17, is a comparatively large air inlet opening 19, for supplying air to the burner. ln the lower portion of the pipe 16, opposite the opening 19, is a threaded opening 20, oiu a diameter approximately that of the opening 15, and screwed into the opening 2O is the horizontal leg of the L-shaped pipe 21, said pipe extending vertically to a point slightly above the level of the pipe 18, and having its upper end open. Screwed onto the lower end of the pipe 16, and cooperating with the cap 22, screwed onto the upper end ct said pipe, for the purpose of drawing the walls 11 and. 12 into proper contact with the upper and lower ends of the casing 10, is a valved hose connection 23. Screwed into the upper portion of the gas bore of the connection 23, and extending upwardly witnin the pipe 16, to a distance slightly above the wall 12, and intermediate the opening 19 and the pipe 18, is a pipe 2e, which Storms the jet or nozzle for passage of gas into the pipe 16, and projects said gas to a point adjacent the upper end of said pipe, where it escapes through the pipe 18 and the transverse slots 16, to burn at the perforations of the pipe 18, and at the slots 16.
The cap 22 is provided with laterally directed sockets to receive the ends ot the carrying bail 25.
Secured to the bottom wall 12 are the supporting legs 26.
The operation of the device is as tollows; r1Ehe gas is turned on by rotating the valve in the connection 3, after which a lightel match is applied to the pipe 18, at the opening 15, of the casing, to ignite the gas. The gas also burns at the slits 16', air
being admitted through the opening 19, to
aid the combustion. rihe gas which pours from the upper end ot the nozzle 2e is projected upwardly toward the slits 16. The fumes, and unburned, as well as partially burned gas, is sucked down into the pipe 21, and delivered into the pipe 16, below the opening 19, to rise and burn with the fresh gas which is escaping from the nozzle. rlhus less gas is burned to give the required amount of heat, while at the same time the walls of the heating device are tree from grease and soot.
lllhat is claimed is:
A gas heater comprising a casing having openings in its upper and lower ends, and an ignition opening in one side, a burner tube disposed within 'the casing and projecting through the openings in the ends of the casing, said tube having a. lateral opening adjacent its lower end and transverse slots adjacent its upper end, a cap engaged on the upper end of the tube, a valved connection (ill engaged on the lower yend of the tube, a gas discharging nozzle extending 'from tbe said lconnection upwardly into the tube, and above said lateral opening, a laterally extending perforated pilot tube connected with the upper portion of tbe burner tube and extending to a point adjacent 'Said ignition opening, and a hot air conduit connected with the lower portion ofthe tube opposite the Said lateral opening and extending up- 10 wardly to a point adjacent tbc uppermost of Said slots and externally of the tube.
