DEFLECTING SHADE FOR HEADLIGHTS.
Application led February 7, 1927. Serial No. 166,554.
This invention relates to improvements in lamps and is especially adapted for use in connection with the head lamps of automobiles.
An object of the presentr invention is the provision of a shield adapted to be arranged within a lamp casing and capable of movement toward and away from the lamp, so that the latter may be used to direct the rays of light an appreciable distance in advance of a vehicle, or to intercept the rays of light. l
Another object of the invention is the provision oi"- novel means for moving the shield into and out of position and for supporting said shield within the lamp casing.

Figure 4 is a detail view of the shield operating mechanism.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters or reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the casing of a lamp of the type used for vehicle head lamps. The lamp includes a reflector 11 and a lamp socket 12. Any suitable means may be provided for mounting the socket 12, the'nieans shown consisting of attaching the socket to a substantially L-shaped bracket 13 and mounting the latter so that the socket may be moved axially. For this purpose there is provided a bolt 14 which extends into the lamp casing and upon which is mounted a spring 15. This spring acts to urge the socket toward the front of the lamp, while adjustment may be effected to focuse the lamp by operating the screw.
Mounted for swinging movement within the lamp is a shield 16 and in order to pivotally support the shield there are provided spaced bearing arms 17. Thev inner ends of these arms are clamped or otherwise secured 55 to the socket 12 as indicated at18 and the arms extend laterally, forwardly and upwardly and terminate in bearings 19. These bearings are arranged above and in advance of a lamp 20 positioned within the socket 12'. 00 The shield 16 is provided with oppositely extending pintles 21 which are mounted within the bearings 19 and secured to one of lthese pintles is a toothed wheel 22. Mounted Within the lamp casing is a solenoid 23 whose core 24 is extended and provided with teeth 25 which engage the toothed wheel 22. The solenoid receives current from a battery B or other source through conductor wires 26 and current to the solenoid is eon- 7 trolled by a switch 27.
Normally, the parts are arranged as shown in Figures 1 and 3, the spring 28 being connected to the core 24 so as to yieldingly hold the shield elevated. When the switch 27 is closed to complete ia circuit through the solenoid, the core 24 will be drawn upward to rotate the Wheel 22 and cause the shield '16 to swing downward in front of the lamp 20. The rays from the lamp 20 may thus be used to illuminate the roadway in advance of the lamp, or these rays may be intercepted to prevent the glare from causing confusion to persons approaching the lamp.
Vhile the invention is shown applied to a single lamp, a pair of lamps may be connected so that the shields will operate synchronously, or each one of a pair of lamps may be equipped with the invention and arposite sides of the socket, means mounted upon the socket and connectingthe inner ends of the arms to support said arms, bean ings at the outer ends of the arms, a shield positioned between the arms and having pntes mounted in said bearings, a toothed Wheel secured to one of the pintles, 2L solenoid having n toothed core engaging the Wheel to swing the shield downward when the so1e-l noid is energized and means to move the shield to e normally eevzited position.
