STAPLER.
Original applicationk filed Hay 7, 1925, Serial No. 28,545. l Divided and this application led October 19,
My invention relates to a stapler, and has for an object to provide a stapler which has its body mounted on the base so as to be conveniently removed therefrom, and so arranged that the body maybe used in con'- junction with the base as a stapler and may also be removed from the base and separately used as a tacker; another object is to provide the stapler' base with means for housing staples therein; and another object is to provide a stapler having a body which has elements reversibly mounted thereon so as to be used as stop means and 'to adapt said body forv use with the base as a. stapler, and also to have said elements reversed so as to act as protruding claws for engaging material and drawing and holding` the same thereby adapting the body to be used as a tacker apart from the base. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
This is a division of applicants prior application for patent for Staplers, filed May 7, 1925, Serial No. 28,545.
The invention consists in the vcombinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention willbe best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which, Y
Fig. l isan elevational view showing the present form of stapler body mountedin position on the base;
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view,
taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig.k 3 is an elevational side view of the body with the stop plates reversed to adapt the body separately for use as a material puller and tacker; y
Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view thereof,
partly broken away; and
Fig. is an elevational end view thereof.
The form of construction illustrated com prises a stapler body 30 removably mounted on av base 3l by means of a pairof lugs 32 on the base and a hand sc rew having a lnurled head 33 and passing through said lugs and through a guide member 34 adapted for guiding the staples 35 through the body member 30, to the front end 30 thereof,
above the stapler block 36 on the base.
The base is provided with a chamber 37.
in which a drawer 38 is removably mounted and adapted to receive acontainer or car- Serial No. 63,241.
tridge 39 adapted to Contain and house the 55 staples 35.
ln this form of the invention. the stapler body is particularly adapted for use as a tacker and to be useful in drawing material like screens for tacking them upon the frame bars and the like.
The stop means in this form include plates or members 4l which are adjustably mounted on each side of the body by the use of slots v42 on said plates engaging guide 65 pins 43 on the body, each plate being firmly heldin its adjusted position by a screw 44 engaging through a. slot 45 on the plate. These slots are placed near one edge of the plate, so as to properly adapt the plates as stop means when mounted in the manner shown in Fig. l, and also to make them properly adjustable on the body. These plates or members 41 are furthermore provided With claws or teeth 46 which are used to engage material such as a screen for drawing and holding the material in position on the screen bar or frame when said plates are mounted with the claws at the front end of v the body, as shown in Fig. 3, and when the 80 body is thus used as a tacker apart from the base. The screen or similar material may thus b e engaged by the claws 46 and drawn in position on the frame bars, by the use of the body 30 arranged as indicated in Fig. 3, and by depressing the plunger inthe usual mannerl the staple is driven in position through the screen or material into the frame.
It is apparent from the above disclosures that the body may be used with the base and employed as astapler, and that said bodyl may be used by itself with the plates ar ranged to havev the claws at the front of the body, and to adapt the device as a tacker and that the device is especiallyadapted for use as a tackerand to draw the material into position upon a frame and to hold it in such position by the claws 46 during the tacking operation.
While I havelillustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying vmy invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departure from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore` do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and f niodil'ieetions es come Within the Scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim :is new and desire to Secure by Letters Patent is:
l.. A stapler compriming` :t base und a ,etzipling body removably inonn'ted thereon; z., gauge body to projet-.t theretronrto overlap the eorrespmnlingg side ot seid bane; and seein'- ing members arranged und. adapted. to Secure said ple-.te to said body in two positions7 in one position .said plete being r'eeured in overlapping arrangement and in the other said position said plate being' secured in retracted position, subetmitinlly :in described.
pluie mounted on one Side or' seid 2. A stapler Comprising a. base and astapling body removably mounted thereon; two gauge plates mounted on opposite Sides of yseid body to overlap the sides of 4said base, said plates being provided With slots adjacent the upper edges thereof; `1nd se- .Curingl n'iembereI passing through Said Slots and edjnstzibly securing said plates to 'said body, said Slots and Securing members being arranger and positioned to permit of reversal, et said platee` on said body, thereby rendering,y said plates inoperative es gauge men'ibers, substantially as; described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my nume to this speeiiieation.
