E. J. GULICK TAMPION PAD Filed April 1 2. 1926 2M GMyW flow-626 M.
Patented Aug. 9, 1927.
UNITED STATES EDWARD J'. GULIGK, OF ELKHARE INDIANA.
TAMPION PAD.
Application filed April 12, 1926.
My invention relates to improvements in wind musical instruments of the saxophone class, and the like, and especially to tampion pads therefor.
In the construction and design of saxo- ,phone pads and keys it is of primary importance that they be of simple construction and that the contact of metal on metal be eliminated.
The main object of my invention to provide a saxophone tampion pad which is simple, cheap, very effective, and easily made and assembled. Another object of the invention is to provide a saxophone tampion pad which can be readily pressed into the pad-cup and retained therein by the tight fit.
Other objects of the invention are men tioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of my inven tion is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 illustrates a fragment of a saxophone to which the invention is applied; Fig. 2 is a cross-section takenthrough the saxophone body at one of the tone openings and showing the key and key pad; Fig. 3 is a cross section through the tampion pad and tampion prior to assembly thereof; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the pad ring; and Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4:.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the sever al views on the drawing.
Referring to the details of the drawing the numeral 1 indicates a saxophone fragment which may be of the usual tapered tubular construction, and which is provided with a plurality of the usual lateral tone openings 2, the flanged up-standing rim3 whereof constitutes the seat for the key and pad hereinafter described.
The numeral 4 indicates the cup-like key body provided with the annular depending peripheral flange 5 within which the key pad assembly herein described is adapted to be removably mounted,
My improved key pad assembly comprises the annual ringlike pad carrier 6, the felt pad, composed of the two annular elements 7 and 8, of which the latter may be ringlike, and the kid leather. cover 9 adapted to be suitably secured about the pad and ring Serial No. 101,827.
after the two part pad has been fitted within the carrier 6. As illustrated, a draw string 10 is shown to secure the cover 9 about the pad and carrier, but any suitable adhesive may be used for that purpose when desired. The pad carrier 6 is preferably made of ductile sheet metal and is provided with the outwardly extending angular flange 11, the body of said carrier being slightly less in diameter than the interior diameter of the pad-cup & to insure a tight fit of theasscmbled pad when the latter is pressed into said pad-cup, and whereby said pad assembly is firmly retained within said pad-cup by said tight fit, and in which position of the pad assembly the flange 11 of the' pad carrier serves asa stop element to properly position the pad within the pad-cup.
Normally, the pad assembly described is held snugly within the pad-cup 4, but it may be readily removed therefrom by the use of a knife blade by inserting the point thereof between the flange 11 and the edge of the key body and prying thereon.
I claim 1. In a wind musical instrument of the class described, the combination of a pad cup provided with a peripheral depending flange, and a key pad assembly mounted within said pad-cup, said pad assembly comprising an annular pad carrier provided with an angular outwardly extending peripheral flange, a pad arranged within said carrier, and a flexible pad cover secured about said pad and carrier, said key pad. assembly being fitted tightly within said pad-cup and retained therein wholly by said tight lit.
2. In a wind musical instrument of the class described, the combination of a padcup provided with a peripheral depending flange, and a key pad assembly mounted within said pad-cup, said pad assembly comprising a ring-like carrier provided with an angular outwardly extending peripheral flange, a pad arranged within said carrier, and a flexible pad cover secured about said pad and carrier, said key pad assembly being fitted tightly within said pad-cup and retained therein wholly by said tight fit, and said pad carrier flange engaging the edge of said key body fiange as a stop element.
3. In a wind musical instrument of the character described, the combination of a pad-cup provided with an endless peripheral de )ending flange to form a cup-like key b0 y, and a key-pad assembly arranged and fitted tightly Within said pad-cup and against said depending flange and retained therein wholly by said tight fit with said flange, said pad assembl including a metal pad carrier and a yielda 1e pad body.
In witness whereof I have hereunto afiixed my signature this 8th day of April, 1926.
EDWARD J. GULICK.
