Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR W. STRAWN, OF FOREST, INDIANA.'
NEST.
Application filed May 5,
This invention relates to nests for poultry houses. the general object of the invention being to provide individual nests which may be suitably supported in a house so that any desired nest can be removed from the house without disturbing the other nests, thus rendering it easier to clean the nests than where a battery of nests is used and also rendering it possible to move the nests with so a setting hen therein without disturbing the hen.
Another object of the invention is to make the bottom of the nest removable so that the nest can be easily cleaned and disinfected.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specially pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a nest showing the. same attached to a wall.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4; is a perspective view of the bottom and front. I
In these views, 1 indicates the back of the nest, 2 the sides thereof which have inclined tops and 3 indicates the top which is preferably hinged to the back and is supported in inclined position by the sides. The side pieces have attached to their lower ends the strips 4 which form guideways for the removable bottom 5 of the nest. These strips at their outer ends support a cross piece 6 which supports the front or outer end of the bottom. The front piece 7 of the nest is att-ached to the bottom a slight distance from g 1926. Serial No. 106,936.
through the extension into a wall or other support of the hen house. The hinges for the top are shown at 10.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided an individual nest, a plurality of which can be arranged in rows in a hen house, the same as the batteries of nests arenow arranged, but with my invention when the nest is to be cleaned, it can be removed by itself, so that hens occupying other nests are not disturbed and where a hen has started to set, she can be carried to the setting house in the nest without disturbing her. By having the bottom and front removable, the cleaning of the nest is facilitated and by this means the nesting material can be removed by removing the bottom and the parts clezlilned without removing the nest from the wa It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novelfeatures of my invention will be readily apparent.
-I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A nest of the class described comprising a back, a pair of side pieces connected with the baclg said side pieces being of less length than the back and having their upper edges sloping downwardly and outwardly from the back, guiding pieces fastened to the inner faces of the side pieces at the lower edges thereof, abottom piece resting upon the guiding pieces, a cross piece having its ends connected with the front ends of the guiding pieces and upon which the front of the bottom piece rests, said guiding pieces and the bottom piece being of greater length than the width of the side pieces so that the front end of the, bottom piece forms a shelf, a front piece fastened-to the bottom piece a distance from the front edge thereof, said front piece having an opening in its upper portion and a cover hinged to the projecting portion of the back and resting upon the sloping edges of the side pieces.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
