Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. PHILP, OF HUMBOLDT, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,803, dated May 25, 1875; application filed March 23, 1875.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. PHILP, of Humboldt, in the county of Gibson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Bale Tie; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The tie is of wire drawn round the bale and interlocked at its ends. The peculiarity of this look forms my present improvement; and it consists in making the tie directly within a coil and clasp upon one end of the wire, by passing the other end first through the clasp and then through the coil before its final fastening with the clasp, whereby a very simple and effective tie is obtained with the lock made directly through the coil, which sustains all the strain.
The drawings represent a bale bound by my improved wire tie.
The wire-strand 20 has a single or double coil, 0, formed near one end, and the end itself is formed into a cross-clasp, (Z. The tie is made directly with the coil 0, by passing the other end of the wire through the coil before interlocking it with the clasp, so that the strain is borne wholly within the coil.
By passing the wire through the coil the tie is made more secure than when passed round on the outside of the coil, and confined by a pin passed through the coil, and overlapping the double strands of the tie end.
I claim- The wire bale-tie having the coil 0 near one end, and passing the other end through it before it is brought into the clasp d at the end of the coiled end of the wire for final fastening, as shown and described.-
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. PHILP.
