The present invention relates. to improvements in. combined door fasteners and alarms, and has for its: main objects to provide a simple device of this character the latch member of which can be easily and readily swung into inoperative position when it is not desired to use the same; and which embraces a. strong, durable and exceptionally efiicient fastener arrangement.
With. these and other objects in View, which will more fullyappear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door, showing the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the door and the combined door fastener and alarm, on a larger scale; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device shown in Fig. 2, also on a larger scale, the latch of the device being in its operative position.
In the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a door frame, to which is hinged, in the usual manner, a door 11. A lock 12 of any suitable construction is provided for securing the door from the outside. For the purpose of securing the door from the inside against forcible entry, a bracket 13 is attached by screws 14, or otherwise, to the inner face of the door adjacent its free vertical edge 15, the said bracket extending at right angles to the inner face 16 of the door, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. This bracket is made of metal and is properly strengthened by ribs 17 or otherwise. In its free end the said bracket is provided with a horizontally extending slot 18, the lower edge 19 of which is extended beyond the body portion of the bracket, to form a ledge for the purpose hereinafter to be described. anism, such as a hammer actuating device therefor, whereby, when the bell is released and allowed, to berevolved by the usual spring, the hell is. sounded. The base 20 is attached to the bracket by screw-bolts 22, or
otherwise; On the bell base mounted a plunger trip 23, which, when pressed tor ward the center of the bell, releases: the
mechanism and causes the bell to be) sounded. This plunger trip is disposed in para lel .relation to the bracket 13, its, head 2 L projecting beyond the inner edge 25 of the slot 18, as shown in Fig.2 of the drawings.
In alignment with the bracket 13 is attached, for instance by screws 26, to the door frame a bracket 27, which extends in parallel relation to the bracket 13. On the free end of the bracket 27 is provided a horizontal pivot pin 28, on which is mounted a latch 29. This latch is provided adjaset of notches serving, in co-operation with the lugs 30, to hold the latch 29 in its vertical, inoperative position, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the other set serving to keep the latch in its horizontal, operative position, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. When the latch is in the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, it is in the path of the plunger trip 23, when the door is swung toward opening position.
The operation of the combined door fastener and alarm is as follows: When the device is not in use, the latch 29 is disposed vertically, as shown in Fig. 2 of the draw ings, in which case it does not co-operate with the bracket 13 and allows thus the door to be opened and closed in the same manner as if the said device were not mounted on the door. When the door is to be secured against forcible entry, the latch 29 is shifted toward the head 32 on the pivot pin 28, so
as to disengage the lugs 30 from the 'horizontally disposed notches 31 in the bracket 27. The latch is then turned 90, until its free end is brought to rest on the ledge 19, and released, whereby the blade spring 33 g y a 1,636,947
seats the lugs 30 in the Vertically disposed notches 31, the parts being then in the positions shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.- If the door is opened to a slight degree,the free end of the latch abuts against the inner edge of the slot in the bracket 13, preventing the door from being opened further. At the same time the head 24 of the plunger trip strikes against the latch 29, whereby the bell is at once operated, giving an alarm. Inasmuch as in these positions of the elements the upper portion of the free end of the bracket 13 overhangs the latch 29, or in other words since the latch is disposed within the slot 18, it is impossible to'dislodge the latch 29 from the slot 18, when the door is slightly open, by means of a thin blade or ointed instrument, inserted between the c oor ainb and the door.
What I claim is:
"The combination with a door frame and a door hinged thereto, of a bracket attached to'the door adjacent its free vertical edge, said bracket being provided with a horizontal slot extending from the free end thereof toward its attached end, a ledge on said bracket forming a continuation of the lower edge of said slot and projecting beyond the body portion of said bracket, a bracket secured to the door frame in alignment with said first-mentioned bracket, a latch pivotally mounted upon said second-mentioned bracket and adapted to rest on said ledge and to enter said slot when said door is partially opened, and coacting means on said second-mentioned bracket and said latch for keeping said bracket both in its operative and inoperative positions, at will.
