The pushing under of the bed-pan for easing nature is hurtful and difficult .for patients which have undergone an operation and to whom the slightest movement causes pain, the healing process bein sometimes unfavorably affected by the ralsing of the body of the patient.

.This invention has for its object to improve the construction of the sick-bedin such a manner that the patient himself can bring a bed pan into the required position by simply turning a crank wheel or the like, so that easing of nature is possible without lifting the body. The patient is thus independent of the nurse and the fati e which was caused hitherto by the use 0 the bed-pan is avoided.

The invention consists essentially in a transverse shaft journaled on the bedstead and adapted to be revolved by means of a crank wheel keyed on the shaft in easy access of the patient. The revolving movement of the transverse shaft is transmitted by a bevel wheel gear upon'two shafts journaled in the longitudinal direction carrying a cut outportion of the mattress designed to be removed from under the anus, the other longitudinal shaft carryin in a fork the bed-pan which is thus inserte into the hollow space formed by the removing of the portion of the mattress. When the crank wheel is turned in the opposite direction as before thabed-pan is removed'and the portion of the mattress is re-inserted.

An embodimentof the invention is shown, by way of example, on the accompanying drawing which shows a sick-bed with a spring mattress. v

Fig. 1 shows in plan view the spring mattress with the arrangement according to the invention.

Fig. 2 is a cross section on line AB of Fig. 1, the cut out portion of the mattress being inserted.

Fig. 3 is a cross section on line CD of Fig. 1 the cutout portion of the mattress being removed and the bed-pan inserted.

A circular opening in the mattress at the place where the posterior of the patient rests v is framed by a ring a of angular cross section. On this ring a the cut out portion of the mattress covered with a corresponding portion 8 of the sheet is fixed. In bearin b fixed on the bedstead a transverse sha d is journalled. Adjusting rings 0 serve to adjust the position of said transverse shaft. On one end ofv the transverse shaft d provided with a worm a worm wheel gear h is mounted which is enclosed in a casing g and connected with a hand wheel f so that by this hand wheel the shaft d can be revolved. Any other convenient transmission means might. be used for revolving the transverse shaft d. In bearings b on cross bars 6 and k of the bedstead longitudinal shafts 'm, n are journaled which are revolved from the transverse shaft d by means of bevel wheel gears o enclosed in protecting hoods o. A pair of levers p rigidly connected with the longitudinal shaft m serve to transmit the revolving movement of shaft m through the intermediary of a pair of elbow levers g connected with the levers p by a connecting piece 3 said elbow levers (i1 pivoting in the point r and sliding in gui e bars w, upon the bottom 8 of the cut out portion t of the mattress. The bottom 8 of the cut'out portion at of the mattress is hingedly connected with a pivot point u by a band w, said pivot point u be ing attached to the ring a which frames the opening in the mattress. The cut out portion 6- of the mattress, which has special springs z, .is' covered with a removable sheet 8. On thelongitudinal shaft n two levers 2 are keyed, which are hingedly connected with levers 3. Between the lovers 3 a ring 4 of sheet metal or the like, having a beaded upper edge 4 is pivotally suspended and a bedan 5 slips over this ring 4, so that the stab e equilibrium-position of the bed-pan 5, having lateral handles '6, is ensured at the revolving of shaft n.

To ensure an inodorous closing of the bedpan 5 the beaded edge of ring 4 bears from elow against an elastic bolster 7 fixed to the bedstead.

The arrangement can be easily made in any sick-bed and it permits of the patient easing nature independently of the nurses and without any movement of the body. The shafts d, m and n are preferably mounted in ball-bearings, in order to ensure an easy and noiseless revolving of the said shafts, and with the same object in view the wheel gears are made of resistant and tough ma-- For hygienic reasons all the metal,

I claim a A sick-bed with arrangement for easing nature comprising in combination with the bedstead and with the mattressa transverse shaft journalled in said bedstead, a hand wheel and a wormegear drive for revolving said transverse shaft, two cross bars, bearings on said cross bars, two longitudinal shafts mounted in said bearlngs, means for transmitting the revolving movement of said transverse shaft to said longitudinal shafts, a cut out portion of the mattress, means for connecting said out out portion of the mattress with one of said longitudinal shafts so that when said shaft revolves in one sense said cut out portion of the mattress is removed from said mattress, a bed-pan, a frame on which said bed-pan is, suspended in equilibrium, and a lever system connecting said frame with the other longitudinal shaft,

so that when said hand Wheel is rotated in anticlockwiseqdirection said out out portion of the mattress is removed and said bed-pan is inserted into the corresponding openm of the mattress and that when said han wheel is rotated in clockwise direction said bed-pan is removed from the openmg of the mattress and said out out portion of the mattress is re-inserted into said opening of the mattress. v
