- VISE Application filed January As a preface to the following description of myinvention, it may be stated that as vise-stands have hitherto beenprovided considerable dii'liculty has been experienced'in thetilting or canting of thestands on the floor. upon whichv they rest, when-subjected to considerable force by the workman,ias for example in the threading of relatively large pipes held in the vise, the resistance 10 presented bythe pipe, tothe rotation of the cutting die applied thereto, causing the stand to tilt or cant as stated.
,My Object is to provide simple and-eco nomical means, and which may be applied to vise-stands now in use for preventing such tiltingor canting action, and without danger of impairing the stand.

The particular construction of vise stand illustrated is of common and well-known form, the stand comprising a top portion 10 of frusto-pyramidal form, providing the top plate 11 and the upwardly converging as represented at 13, and four legs 14 which fit into thecorners of'the top portion and are rigidly secured thereto, by which are,

The rod- 19, in applying the stop means to position, is turned at its threaded connection with the table to position in which the upper end of the head 21 is forcibly pressed upwardly against the ceiling 17 thus firmly forcing the stand against the floor and firmly holding it against the canting or tilting action referred to. The head 20 is shown as of hexagonal form and is pro vided with an opening 22 whereby the rod 19 may be turned, as desired, either with a. wrench or by a rod introduced into this op enlng. f
The engagement of the rod 19 with the stand may be at any desirable place'thereon, but preferably such engagement, particularly when the stop means are to be used on vise-stands now in use, is at a bracket 28 provided as a part separate from the stand and adapted to be rigidly and firmly secured in position on the latter. The form of bracket shown is particularly adapted for application to a stand of the pa'r'ticularform shown and serves to so distribute the forces exerted against the stand when the stop means are brought into play that danger of: impairment of the stand,
even when the parts thereof are relatively thin, is reduced to the minimum, this bracket being formed to provide a relatively heavy outer end portion 24: threaded to receive the rod 19 and a lighter tail portion 25 which overlaps the marginal edge of the plate portion 11, the .form of this bracket being such as shown that its underside presents an angular recess 26 at which it fits con'l'iormingly an edge portion oi? the stand as shown in Fig. Both the stand and the tail portion of the bracket contain openings represented at 28 and 29, respectively, to receive a bolt 30 which rigidly holds the bracket in place on the top portion 10 of the stand.
It will he understood from the foregoing that by my invention I provide simple and economical means for preventing tilting or :anting oi the vise-stand, and of such character that the may he readil y released, when it is desired to shift the stand to a new location, and quickly reconditioned for use following the rc-positioning ot the stand.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to he understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be variously modified and altered Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

In combination, a vise-standhaving a rise thereon for clamping a pipe to he operated on, and means cooperating with said stand and a fixed structure above it for resisting force applied to the stand and tend ing to tilt the latter and comprising a bracket presenting an angular recess at its underside at which it fits over the edge portion of the top of the stand and engages the upper and side surfaces of said top, and stop means interposed between, and engaging said hracket and said fixed structure.

In combination, a vise-stand having a vise thereon tor clain 'iing a pipe to he operated on, and means cooperating with said stand and a fixed structure above it for resisting force applied to the stand and tend ing to tilt the latter and comprising a bracle ct having an angular recess at which it {its over the edge portion of the top of the stand and engages the upper and side sur tacos of said top, means for securing said bracket in place on said stand and stop means engaging said bracket and said fixed structure.
