noon CONTAINER. I
Application filed June 21,
7 some instances the containers have been procided with covers either removably placed thereon or hinged thereto. Considerable ditliculty has been experienced in keeping containers of both types clean and sanitary. 1n the case of the open top containers, the c vers are apt to be and often are left oil the containers and sometimes lost, thus exposing the contents to the accumulation of dust and germs and in the case of containers provided with hinged covers (with which springs are sometimes employed), the syrup rom the container is apt to accumulate at the hinge and spring connection and many of the syrups such as employed at soda fountains, for example, contain more or less acid which would have a corroding effect upon the metal of the hinge and spring CODHQC". tions for the covers.
An object of my present invention is to provide a covered container for food material such as flavoring syrups, which shallbe sanitary in every respect and easy to keep clean.
A further object is to so connect the cover with the body of the container that it can be readily moved'to cover or to uncover the container without removing it therefrom and without the employment of hinges or springs; so that the cover will not become detached from the container during'normal use of the latter but which may be removed when necessary to facilitate cleaning.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of partsas hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation (partly in section) showing a container embodying my improvements and with the cover swung to open position.
Figure 2 is a plan view with the parts in the position shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section 1926. Serial No. 117,512.
with the cover in position to close the container, and
Figures 5 and 6 are views illustrating details.
The body 1 of the container is provided with a bottom 2, the peripheral portion of which latter is provided with'a depending flange 3 which is embraced by a flange 4 bent from the lower edge portion of the body 1. v
A handle 5 having an enlargement 6 is iveted as at 7-7 to the body 1 and the upper edge of the latter opposite that portion of the body to which the handle is secured is provided with a. pouring spout 8. The upper edge portion of the body 1 (which latter made of sheet metal) is provided with a bead 9 to form a seat for a cover 10. The
peripheral portion of the cover 10 is bent upon itself; as at 11 and this portion of the cover overlies and rests upon the seat or bead 9 at the upper edge of the body portion 1.
The metal of the cover is also bent downwardly and then upwardly as at 12 to form a depending flange which enters the mouth of the container as clearly shown in Figure 4.
Secured (preferably by means of rivets) to the body 1 immediately'over thehandle 5 is a bracket 13 having upper and lower arms 14 and 15 which are perforated for the accommodation of a spindle 16. This spindle isprovided'at its upper end with a knob 17 and between this knob and a shoulder '18 on the spindle, an arm 19 secured-to and projecting from the cover is fixedly attached.
The spindle 16 is rotatable in the bracket arms 14 and 15 and it is also longitudinally movable, so that the "user; grasping the handle 5 may, with his thumb, press the spindle upwardly so as to raise the cover 10 sufliciently to permit it to be swung from closed to open position. The knob 17 provides means whereby the cover may be manipulated without necessity for the user to handle the cover per se. Vertical movement of the spindle 16 and the cover 10 will be limited by the engagement of a lug 20 on the spindle with the bracket arm 14 and such engagement of the lug 20 with the arm 14 will prevent disconnection of the cover from the container during normal use of the latter. The opening 21 in the bracket arm 14 is made elongated as shown at 22, Figure 6, so that the cover may be swung to such position as to bring the lug 20 in line with the portion 22 of the opening in the bracket arm 14, when the spindle 16 and the cover to which it is attached may be entirely removed from the container to facilitate cleaning.
When the cover is raised in the manner previously explained to permit it to be swung to open position, it will, upon assuming open position, drop sufficiently to permit its peripheral portion to engage the body of the container just under the beaded upper edge 9 thereof. The cover will thus be held in open position during the act of pouring syrup from the spout 8 of the container and thus the cover will be prevented from approaching closed position when the container is tilted in the act of pouring. It will be seen that the engagement of the peripheral portion of the cover with the body of the container under the head 9 will not only prevent swinging of the cover but will. also prevent longitudinal movement of the spindle 16 and forward movement of the cover.
The container may be used to measure quantities food or liquid and to facilitate this it may be graduated in pints or fractions thereof and the graduation marks may be formed by indentations 23 which may be viewed both exteriorly and interiorly of the container. These graduatious will preferably be located in the wall of the container at right angles to the position of the handle 5.
In order that the sanitary condition of my improved covered container shall be further insured, all parts thereof are provided with enamel coating.
The cover may be provided with a suitable label to denote the contents of the container and other slight changes might be made to adapt the device for a particular purpose without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with aportable container body and a cover, the latter adapted to rest upon the body and having a depending flange to enter the mouth of the body, of a bracket secured to the upper portion of said body, and a swinging cover supported by said bracket, said bracket and cover being so disposed with respect to the body that when the cover is in open position it will be held in such position by engagement with the body when i the container is tilted, a handle for the container body, and a spout on the container approximately opposite said bracket.
2. A covered receptacle comprising a body portion having a beaded open end, a bracket secured to the body, a cover, a spindle secured to the cover and mounted in said bracket for rotary and longitudinal movement-s, a handle for the body, a spout opposite the connection of the cover with the body, said cover occupying a position when in open position, in contact with the body and engaging the under side of the head at the open'end of said body.
3. The combination with the body and cover of a container, of a bracket secured to the body and provided with parallel arms having openings, the opening in one of said arms having an elongated portion, a spindle secured to the cover and mounted in the openings of the bracket arms for rotary and longitudinal movements, and a lug on said spindle to pass through the elongated portion of the opening in one of said arms when the cover is swung to a predetermined position, to permit the cover to be removed from the body to facilitate cleaning.
The combination with a portable container body and a cover, of a bracket secured to the body, a spindle secured to the cover and supported by said bracket for rotary and longitudinal movement, and a handle secured to the cover under said bracket and spindle, whereby the user when grasping the handle, may apply upward pressure to the spindle to raise the cover.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
JOE KORKAMES.
