This invention relates to improvements in operating handles and in particular to supporting and securing mechanism therefor.
It is a primary object of the invention to 6 provide a securing mechanism which will securely hold an operating handle in position and which can be installed or removed.
A further object is to provide a mechanism of the type referred to which is constructed of relatively few parts and which utilizes as far as possible the parts customarily used in modern automobile constructions.

Referring to the details of-the drawings the numeral 4 represents a supporting member which ma be a. lockboard or other part of an automo ile door or any other suitable supporting frame member. The numeral 5 indicates generally an operator including the operatingshaft 6 and operating "handle 7. It will be understood t at the shaft 6 quickly and easily is adapted to be slidably or otherwise se-" cured to the mechanism which isto be operated such as a window regulator of any preferred construction (not shown). This invention relates in particular tothe construction permitting the operator 5 to be detachably secured to the supporting frame member 4;,
In the embodiment herein contained the shaft 6 passes slidably and rotatably through amopening 8 in the frame member 1 and is secured therein by means of the securing-members 10. The securing members are'formed with the substantially semi-circular cylindricalbearing surfaces 11 terminating at one end in the outwardly projecting flanges 12 adapted to be secured-to the frame member 4 as by means of the screws 13 or otherwise and terminating at the other end thereof in the locking flanges 14. The securing members are formed with the out- Other and more specific objects willap Wardly. extending substantially semi-circular projections 15 for a purpose referred to below. The operating shaft 6 has formed thereon a securing groove 16 which pro vides a retaining shoulder 17 designed to be engaged by the flanges 14 of the securing members as shownin Figs. 1 and 3. The
. securing members are held in their locking positions in engagement behind the shoulder 17 by means of the sliding escutcheon or shield member 18 which is normally pressed outwardly into locking position by means of-the coil spring 20. It will be seen that as the spring presses the shield member 18 axially toward the handle .portion 7 the shield member engages around the projecting portions 15 of the clamping members to hold the flanges 14 securely within the groove 16. The shaft 6 may be released by pressing the shield member 18 toward the frame memberagainst the tension of spring,-
20 to a position free of the projections 15 as shown in Fig. .2 so that the operating shaft can be withdrawn from its supporting structure.
By the construction herein disclosed only a small number of additional parts are required in the formation of this releasable connection since the escutcheon 18 is similar to and takes the placeof the usual escutcheon designed to cover the bearing for the operating shaft 6. The semi-cylindrical portions 11 of the securing members form with-theopening 8 a bearing for the shaft 6 so that the only part added in the form-a-v tion .of ou'r'new construction is the spring member 20. Itis believed that the use'and operation of the construction will be entirely clear from the above descri tion.- It is to be understood that the em odiment disclosed is merely illustrative and not limiting as to the scope of the invention as equivalents may be used throughout as desired. Forexample, instead of having two securing members it would be possible to have-only one of them provided with a locking flange or a larger number thereof may be used if desired. Instead of having the groove 16 a retaining flange or ring could be mounted upon the periphery of the operator 5 if desired. The scope of the invention is set forth in the appended claims; i
We claim as our invention:-

2. In combination with a support, an operator, means to secure said operator in position on said support, said means including clamping members secured to said support and having inwardly extending engaging flanges, said operator including a reduced portion into which said flanges may pass, and a spring pressed locking shield adapted to pass slidably over said clamping members when said flanges are in locking position.
3. In combination with a support, an operator adapted to be rotatably mounted there on securing and. supporting means for said operator, said means including flexible bearing members secured to said supporting member and carrying adjacent the outer or free ends thereof securing flanges designed for engagement with said operator.

In combination with a support, an operator adapted to be rotatably mounted thereon, securing and supporting means for said operator, said means including flexible bear-- ing members secured to said supporting member and carrying adjacent the outer or free ends thereof securing flanges designed for engagement with said operator and leasable means for locking said securing flanges in securing position.
5. In combination with a support, an openator, a securingmember constructed to interlock with said operator for detachably connecting said operator to said support, means for attaching said securing member operatively to said support, and a movable lock ing member constructed to operatively engage said securing member to hold the latter in its interlocked position.
6. in combination with a support, an open ate-r, an abutment wall formed on said operator, a securing member constructed to en" gage said abutment wall to secure said oper ator to said support, said securing member having a radially movalle part engageable against said abutment, means for connecting said securing member to said support, and additional {means movable axially relatively to said support and operator for releasably holding said securing member in its engaged position.
7. In combination with a support, an operator, a circular shoulder carried by said operator, engaging members anchored relatively to said support for holding said operator in position on said support, said engaging members having parts movable to or from position to engage said shoulder to secure saidoperator to said support, and a slidable escutcheon plate movable axially relatively to said support for releasably holding said engaging members in engaged position.

"In combination with relatively rotatable members one of which is provided with a groove, means to hold said members in assembled position, said means including en gaging elements carriedby one of said members, said engaging elements engaging in said groove, a locking member adapted to encircle portions of said engaging elements to hold said elements in engaged position, or to be moved to position to permit removal thereof and spring means to urge said locking member to locking position.
9. In combination with a support, an operator including a securing shoulder, means for releasably securing and supporting said operator on said support, said means including bearing members secured to said support and forming'a bearing for said operator, one of said bearing members carrying a releasable securing flange and a locking projection, said flange coacting with the shoulder formed on said operator to secure the latter in position and means engageable with said projection for holding said flange in engagement with said shoulder.
10. In combination with a frame part, an operating member, a bearing therefor consisting of concave sections anchored relatively to said frame part and yieldingly engaging said operating member, and means for preventing axial movement of said operating member relatively to said bearing.
