UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY ELIoK, or JAoKson MIcHIGAN,
AssrGNoR TOHAYES WHEEL COMPANY, 01
JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
WHEEL-MAKING MACHINE.
Application filed June 12,
nitely appear from the detailed description to follow. 7 V
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of the invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a perspective view of one arm and table of my machine on its support in position for the action of the air cylinder press.
Fig. II is a detail. vertical sectional view the table showing the details of the spoke supporting spider and central tapering: plug on the depressible center.
Fig. III is a similar sectional View to Fig. II showing the head of the press pushed to position and the spokes forced flat into the rim in complete assembly.
In the drawing similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The parts of sidered by their numbers. 1 is the central supporting column on which the main turntable of the machine swings. 2 is the supporting arm for carrying the work table 4:, the same being adjustable by the hub 23 on the said column 1. 5 is the depressible central support part held yieldingly in position by the spring 6, the same having a locating stop collar 6. 7 is the tapered plug on the yielding center for holding the spokes in position and 8 is the spider with radialarms for locating the spokes in proper radial relation. 9 is the yielding wheel support on tion.
the drawing will be con- 1922. Serial No. 567,521.
the table top for guiding the rim to place and also notched for locating the spokes effectively at their outer ends. 10 is the rim. 11 are the spokes with their tenons placed in the spoke sockets or mortices in the rim. 12 is the air cylinder press carried by the adjustable collar 13 on the column 1. It is provided with a plunger head 14 for pressing the spokes of the wheels to. posisame, this being provided with a handle 16, allof which are common expedients.
I have not shown details of the various 15 is a valve for controlling the delivery 0t air to the cylinder ].T.1 actuating the operations because it seems unnecessary.
Engine cylinders, valves and such parts are well-known and my use of the same is not confined to any particular type. I therefore have not detailed the same.
This invention is claimed broadly in the I companion application and I am here claiming the specific improvement and develop ment on themain structure.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I v
'1 In a wheel making machine, the combination of a suitable table support, guide means thereon for locating a metallic wheel rim, a yieldable central support with a cen-,
tral upwardly pointing tapered plug of dimension to fit and force the inner ends of the spokes to position, a spider with radiating guide arms for guiding the spokes and supporting them in correct radial relation, and a press means to force the spokes to position, coacting as specified.
2. In a wheel making machine, the co1nbination of a suitable table support, guide means thereon for locating a metallic wheel rim, a yieldable central support with a central upwardly pointing tapered plug of dimension to fit and force the inner ends of the spokes to position, and a press means to force the spokes to position coacting as specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY FLICK.
