UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NORRIS H. MERRILL, OF BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT lN CARPET-STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,939, dated May 4, 1875; application filed March 29, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORRIs H. MERRILL, of Buchanan, Berrien county, Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Carpet-Stretcher, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device for stretching carpets, andFig. 2 a vertical transverse section of the same through the capstan and base-board.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention relates to a very simple and effective carpet-stretching device and consists of a stay staple or hook, which is secured to the floor, and connected by a strong cord pass ing through an eye of the same to eyes or staples of a stretching-board, applied by hooks or teeth to the carpet, to be wound up on a small capstan with ratchet-Wheel and spring check-pawl of the base-board.
In the drawing, A represents a staple or hook with shorter front brace or rest attached thereto, which is driven slanting into the floor near the base-board of the room till the rest strikes the floor. A cord, B, passes through a perforation or eye of the brace-hook A, and through eyes a near the ends of a base board or bar, 0, to a wheel or capstan, D, which is applied centrally to bar 0, so as to turn readily on the same by means of a leverhandle, I), applied to a dovetail or other groove of the top part of the capstan.
/ manner, for preventing the turning up of the capstan in opposite direction.
The bar 0 is provided with prongs or teeth b at the under side, placed on the carpet, so that the teeth catch firmly in the fabric when pressed therein.
The cord is adjusted by holding the pawl back. The handle is then inserted and turned so that the cord winds up around the capstan and stretches the carpet as much as desired.
The carpet is tacked down and held in this position, and the device then taken 011 and applied to the next piece, and so on, forming an exceedingly simple and readily-applied carpet-stretcher.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The endless cord B and bar 0, having an eye, a, near each end, in combination with winding-pulley D and staple A, as and for the purpose specified.
NORRIS H. MERRILL.
