Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEroE.
J. STROUSE AND S. H. STROUSE, 0F NEV YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT".
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,289, dated December 23, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J. STRoUsE and S. H. STRoUsE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
The nature of our improvement consists in the form and construction of the yoke and its mode of attachment to the back of the shirt as hereinafter described, whereby a better fit is produced than by any of the modes now in use.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct our improvement we present the following description.
a4 is the yoke beneath which is shown part of the back of the shirt; Z9 is the part which is cutout for the insertion of the collar; the front of the shoulder on each side of the neck is cut in a concave curve forming a spring as shown at c; a similar spring is formed on each side of the back at cl. The yoke terminates at each end at the insertion of the sleeves. The gathering at the back is all concentrated in the space e; the portions j oined-at d are plain, and conform in shape to the curves of l thus making a more perfect fit. By omitting the gathers upon the projecting parts of the shoulders and confining them to the hollow of the back, the comfort of the wearer is much promoted.
The red line represents the ridges or highest part of the shoulder of the man, and indicates the position of the yoke upon the body.
Having thus fully described our improvement we do not claim the formation of the sweep or the arched profile from the neck to the shoulders, of shirts, by means of inserted pieces such as gussets, but
That we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The yoke a, constructed as herein described with curved springs c and CZ in combination with the manner of attaching the same to the back of the shirt, with the gathers in the center as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification this 15th day of June 1855.
JOSEPH STROUSE. SELGrMAN H. STROUSE.
