This invention relates to an improvement in direction signals designed to be mechanically moved when a change in direction oil? travel is contemplated.
The invention specifically contemplates the provision of means whereby the various parts may be protected more or less against the elements when the signal is not in use without interfering with the vtull operative control and movement 01 the signal.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation, partly in section. showing the improved signal in normal position, the operative position of the signal being shown in dotted outline.
Fig. 2 is a broken longitudinal section through the signal arm.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The improved signal comprises a housing 1, preferably 01 metal and of rectangular form, provided with members 2 adapted to receive screw bolts or other fastening means, whereby the signal may be secured to a convenient portion of the vehicle. Pivotally supported at 3 in the upper portion of the casing is a signal arm 4, here shown a member simulating; the human arm and hand. The signal. arm in normal position is adapted to be concealed in the housing; 1, and when moved to operative position, passes through a slot 5 in one wall of the housing.
lhe signal arm is designed to be operated, that is, moved to an operative position by any conventional means, and is designed to he provided with illuminating means whereby the signal may be lighted for use in the dark. For convenience in the application and repair of'such illuminating means, the sign al arm of the present invention is formed with. a longitudinally extending; channel 6. and the illuminating means. here shown as electric lamps 7, are mounted in a metallic casing 8 adapted to be inserted into the channel from the pivoted end of: the arm and frictionally held in place. The metallic casinn 8 which, if desired. may be in sections, is here shown as a single member with transverse partitions 9 carryingr sockets 10 to receive the lamps. Each partition is cutaway at one edge to form an openingll through which the wire or wires leading to the lamps are adapted to pass. In order that the arm, when in normal position in the housing 1, may be more or less protected against the elements, 1 provide a cover 15 of b0X-lllQ form open at the inner side, and pivot this cover at 16 on the top of the housing; 1. The cover is of such length as to substantially close the slot 5 when the parts are in normal position, the side walls of the cover overlying; the sides ot. the housing and being); tormcd with openings l7. which when the arm is moved into signaling position and the cover raised thereby. indicated in dotted lines in Fig.1, the openings 17 will register with the illuminating' openings in the sides of the signal arm proper.
No attempt is made herein to show the various electrical connections, it being; understood that such may include the usual wires and that such connections will include a switch by which the current may be controlled in accordance with its required use.
The important details or the invention is the provision of the hollow sie'nal arm in which the metallic casing; is adapted to be seated, with such casino; carrying: the electrical elements carried by the arm. In this connection, it is to be understood that the casino; 8 may he in separate sections, as carrying a single lamp or he made as an entirety as shownin the drawings. Another feature is the provision of the cover which automatically follows the arm and closes the arm slot of the housing against snow, rain or the like. '7
