DRAFT APPLIANCE.
Application filed August 10, 1925. Serial No. 49,371.
'lhe present invention relates to a dra'lt appliance and has tor its principal object to provide a modification oit the invention disclosed in my copending` application Serial. Number 39,763, tiled June 2G, 1925, also relat'es to a draftappliance. The principal object of the invention is to provide a device ot this nature wherein the same is applicable to what is known as a stitl' hound wagon.
lfn the drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved structure.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereot.
Figure 3 is a :tront elevation thereof showing the main tongue in transverse section.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numerals 5 designate the two hounds rigidly attached to the axle 6 in the usual manner. A metallic Jframe 7 positioned between the hounds 5 in front ot the axle 6 and carries the stub tongue 8 on the center line oit the wagon and having on that part nearest to the front axle 6 a stop 9 which is engageable with the under surfaces ot the hounds 5 thereby placing the weightof the tongues on the hounds and lin'iiting the downward movement ot said tongue. This frame is attached to the hounds by means of a queen bolt 10 which passes through the hounds7 the frame, and the stub tongue, the lateral position ot these parts being maintained by spacing sleeves 11 on the queen bolt. lOutside of one oit the hounds is placed a frame 12 through which and beyond which extends the queen bolt 10. A main tongue 13 is hinged on the queen bolt adjacent the trame 12 so as to be positioned in parallelism with the center line ot the wagon or stub tongue 8. A brace 14k is attached to the axle 6 as at 15 and to the queen bolt 10. A brace arm 16 is attached to the tongue 13 forwardly of the queen boltI and is pivoted to the queen bolt adjacent the hounds 5 farther .trom the tongue 13. The tongue is allowed to swing verticallyT up and down and atv the same time tends to transmit all side motion to the hounds and through them to the iti-ont axle. The brace 16 is curved as is indicated to advantage in Figures 2 and 3 so that the tongue 13 may be swung upwardly from the position shown in Figure 2. The triple tree, not shown, is attached to the stub tongue at a point near its 'liront end in the conventional manner. It is thought that the construction, utility operation, and advantages of the invention will now be clearly understood but it is desired to point out that numerous changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:+-
In a draft appliance wherein there is provided a pair of hounds rigidly mounted on the axle ot a vehicle, a queen bolt passing transversely through the hounds forwardly of the axle7 a frame pivotedon said queen bolt between the hounds forwardly ot the axle, a stop on said frame engageable with the hounds adjacent the axle, and a stub tongue rigidly attached to the trame between the hounds; said `appliance including a second frame mounted on the outside ot one of said hounds, said queen bolt passing through the second frame and therebeyond, a main tongue hinged to the queen bolt adjacent the second trame so as to swing in a plane in parallelism with the plane in which the stub tongue swings, and
a curved brace. fixed at one end to the main tongue forwardly of the queen bolt and pivotally engaged at its outer end with the queen bolt adjacent the hound which is 'liarthest trom the main tongue.
In testimony whereof I al'lix my signature.
CLAUDE DAUGHERTY.
