This invention relates to garments and :more especially to a diaper cover.

, In diaper covers now widely in use the same are madeof more or less light rubber of the continuous waist band the diaper cover is difficult to .put on and frequently torn, thereby rendering the same unlit for further use. 4

Thereforean important object of this invention is to provide an elastic diaper cover of water-proof material slitted from the waist band, whereby to provide a ventilating opening-and to permit the cover to be readily and conveniently placed on a child without the possibility of tearing the-cover.

Further an important object of the invention is to provide a diaper cover havinga ventilating opening extending out through the waist band which permits free circulation ofair to overcome the foregoing disadvantages.

Another aim is to provide a garment of the class described which is formed from one piece which permits the garment to be correctly fashioned and also greatly reduces the cost of manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the. lnvention, the numeral 5-. generallydesignates a single sheet of material ffrom which the garment is formed and which is preferably of rubber, although it maybe made of rubberized cloth or any suitable material. As illustrated iii-Figure 3 the blank 5 is adapted to be folded transversely along .the dotted line 6 so -as to provide what might be said to be the front and rear sides of the garment. One of the sides may be designated by'the numeral 8 and may be either the front or the rear side while the other side is formed by the end portions 9. It will be seen that the end portions 9 when connected are approximately .of the same area as the side 8 and theedges of the end portions 9 may, be connected as indicated at 10. However, the connection between the end portions 9 terminates at a point substantially below the top of the garment whereby to provide a ventilating opening. That is to say the end portions of the blank are allowed to remain-partly free to provide the ventilating opening.

\Vhen the blank is folded along the lines 6 the end portions 9 lie flatly upon the intermediate portion and the lower edge of the blank is stitched or otherwise secured upon itself as indicated at 12 to provide the permanent leg openings 13. The lower edge of the blank 5 may be said to be scalloped on oppositely inclined arcs so that the leg openings are caused to extend more or less diagonally. As illustrated in Figure 3 the end portions of 9 have their lower edges extended diagonally in opposite directions as indicated at 16 and are secured to the edges of the inverted V-shaped cut 17 of the intermediate portion 8 by a suitable adhesive or by stitching.

In fact any suitable means may be em ployed for connecting the end portions 9 at their lower edges to thelower edge of the intermediate portion 8.

Each leg opening is formed with a hem 20 to receive an elastic '21 which as is well known serves toyieldingly secure the end of the leg about the limb of the child. Also in manufacture the upper portion of the garment is gathered and connected to an inner elastic waist band 24, the freeend portions of which are provided with fastening means 26 in the nature of a two-part clasp or the like.

By reason of manufacturing the garment from one piece of material, the cost of manufacture is greatly decreased and further the arrangement employed permits a fuller garment to be provided and one which is corr ctly fashioned and fitted.

The ventilating opening provided by leavin portions of the parts 9 tree permits air to freely circulate, thereby diminishing the heat or the enclosed garment and increasing the comfort of the child.

Further the trout openingto the waist line allows moisture to evaporate, dries the clothes, thereby producing a more healthful condition.

Also in use the opening in the waist line permits the garment to be readily placed on a child and quickly fastened. The possibility of splitting or tearing the cover is also reduced to a minimum by means ot the opening in the waist line and the life of the garment prolonged as the garments now in use are very easily torn.

Attention is directed to the fact that an absolutely water tight connection is provided between the end portions 9 and the intermediate portion 8 by the stitching or other fastening means 12. As previously stated a more or less water tight connection is provided between the limbs and the material surrounding the leg openings in the garment. Therefore absolutely no matter is permitted to escape onto the clothing of the child or its attendant. Furthermore an absolutely water tight connection is provided at the point 11 so that leakage is prevented.

lVith reference to the foregoing description and to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that the period of usefulness of the garment is greatly increased and that the costof manufacture is substantially decreased.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed. is

A blank for use in forming a garment ot' the character described comprising a substantially oblong sheet of waterproof material, the lower longitudinal edge of said blank having a relatively wide and shallow inverted V-shape notch midway its ends, and oppositely inclined arcuate notches extending from opposite ends of said middle notch and straightoppositely inclined edges extending from said arcuate notches to the transverse ends of the blank, the upper halves of the transverse end edges offset outwardly, said blank being adapted to have the end portions folded over upon the middle portion to meet along a line which approximately bisects said middle notch, the folded ever end portions being adapted to be secured to underlying portion of the blank along the edges of the middle notch and the straight inclined lower edges beyond the arcuate notches to provide the garment with leg openings, said garment being open at the upper half of the front.
