CHIMNEY.

This invention relates to chimneys and has for its objects the provision of an improved chimney flashing adapted to prevent the leakage of water through the roof and which flashing may be economically manufactured as well as being readily repaired and replaceable. The various advantages of my invention will appear from the following drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view; Fig. 4 is a bottom view; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section. Chimney flashing 1 has upper flange 2 extending inwardly and lower flanges 3 and 4 extending outwardly. Flange 4 may be suitably connected to flashing 1 as by bolts, a suitable space being provided between lower flanges 3 and 4 for the introduction of portions of the roofing, such as shingles 5. Flashing 1 surrounds the chimney, upper flange 2 being adapted to fit tightly against it and cement 6 being preferably packed 2 around the chimney on said flange for the purpose of forming a water tight seal. Lower flange 4 rests upon the roof furring, upon which the shingles are placed, some of the flanges being inserted between flanges 3 and l. As indicated in Fig. 1, the flange 3 passes under ridge piece 7.

It is obvious from the foregoing that many variations may be made from the details and-arrangement of the particular form of my invention herein illustrated and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, which is expressed in the following claim.

I claim:

In a flashing structure for chimneys, a hollow sheet metal casing adapted to occupy an enclosing relation to a chimney but substantially spaced away from the walls thereof to provide an insulating air chamber separating the casing from the outer wall surfaces of the chimney, an inwardly directed flange member at the upper end of the casing arranged to provide a support for a plaster sealbetween the chimney and the upper end of the casing, an outwardly directed circumscribing flange member formed on the lower end of the casing, and another flange member having an upwardly directed portion attached to the inner surface of the lower portion of the casing and an outwardly 55,

directed circumscribing flange portion ar-. ranged beneath and spaced from the flange formed on the lower end of the casing, the space between the flanges being adapted to receive edge portions of roofing material.
