Description

M. 'McDEVlTT Thill-Coupling.
No. 162,671. Patented April27,1875.
THE GRAPHIC CO.PHOTO-L|Tli739&4l PARK PLAGCJ Y- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
v MARTIN MODEVITT, OF HAMPTON, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification formin g part of Letters Patent No. 162,67 1, dated April 27, 1875; application filed March 2, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN MoDEvrr'r, of Hampton, inthe county of Elizabeth (Jity and in thegjfelttate of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a thill-eoupling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my thillcoupling. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clip; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the thilliron. Fig. 4 shows the pin used for connecting the clip and thill-iron.
A represents an ordinary clip, to be fastened on the front axle in the usual manner, and this clip is provided on its front side with two parallel ears, B B. 0 represents the thilliron, provided at its outer end with the eye D, fitting between the ears B B, it being pivoted between them by a bolt, G. This bolt is tapering at both ends, and provided near each end with a flange, a, of the same length as the thickness of the ears B B. From the bolt-holes in the ears B and eye D extend slots 1) upward and inward at an angle of about forty-five degrees. WVhen the shafts are turned upward, so that the slot in the eye D corresponds with the slots in the ears B B, the bolt G can be inserted the flanges a thereon filling the slots in the ears B. The shafts can now be lowered, which prevents the bolt from coming out. By raising the shafts the bolt can be taken out from either side, and by simply moving it a tritle in either direction one of the flanges a will partially enter the slot in the eye D, and lock the shafts in an elevated position.
I do not broadly claim a feathered pin, in combination with the notched ears of a thilliron, for the insertion of said pin, as I am aware that such is not new. With my invention I dispense with the usual headed bolt, and the feathers a a being upon the ends of my bolt allow the thill-iron and its perforated eye to freely revolve, and at the same time prevent the bolt G from coming out of its position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the clip A, having parallel perforated ears B B, with slots 1), the thill-iron (J, with perforated eye D, having also slot 1), and the fastening-bolt, provided with the two feathers a a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of February, 1875.
\ MARTIN MCDEVIT'I.
