WILLIAM W. HUNTING, OF AIKEN, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT lN AUTOMATIC FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,558, dated April 27, 1875; application filed July 30, 12574.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WV M. WV. HUNTING, of Aiken, county of Barnevillc and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Automatic Fans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description of the same.
This invention is an improvement on a similar subject on which a patent was allowed me October 21, 1871, but which said allowance has inadvertently lapsed.
The nature of my said improvement will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure I is a front elevation, and Fig. II is a side elevation.
The operative parts of the machine are supported upon a frame consisting of two side plates, A, which are to be held together and supported in place by the stud-bolts (4. Between the plates A, and resting upon them, is a clockwork apparatus, B, driven by the mainspring b, in the usual manner of clockgearing. In connection with the clock-gearing, and driven by it, is a fly-wheel, G, which carries a crank, 0, which rotates in the slot dof the pendulum D, and gives to the latter a vibrating motion as the crank rotates. The
pendulum D has a movable fulcrum, d, which is secured in any position desired, by means of a set-screw, in the slot or ways E, which are secured to one of the plates A. Y
In my former invention there was a slot for the fulcrum d in the ways E, and also in the pendulum; but the improvement in this respect is in placing the adjustment wholly in the ways E, and leaving the pendulum-piece solid.
To the lower end of the pendulum-rod is attached the fan F, and to the other end of the said pendulum rod is attached a counterweight, G, which is arranged to slide up or down on the rod to suit the position of fulcrum d, and is secured in position by a setscrew, 9. As the fulcrum dis moved up or down, the motion of the fan will be fast or slow, in proportion to the length of stroke controlled in this manner.
Having described my invention, I claim The clock work A B O c, with a vibrating pendulum, D, having a slot, d, for the crank o, and a movable fulcrum, 01, adjusted in the ways E, the said pendulum carrying on its lower end a fan, F, and on its upper end an adjustable counter-weight, G, all constructed and arranged to operate in the manner herein described and set forth.
WILLIAM W. HUNTING.
