This invention relates to appliances for being removed by taking out the bolts 8 converting the interior of an automobile into a bed useful when camping, and its object is to provide a means for this purpose which is applicable with a minimum amount of disturbance. to the interior equipment of the car.

A further object of the invention is to apply it particularly to cars of the closed type in which the backs of the front seats are pivotally attached to the bases thereof.

Another object of the novel appliance is to construct it with utmost simplicity, so that its cost maybe small and its application a simple matter to the average motorist.

lVith the above objects in view and any I others which may suggest themselves in the specification and claim to follow, a better understanding of the invention may be had by reference. to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an interior view of an automobile to which the novel bed appliance is adaptable Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the in terior of the car converted into a bed; and

Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the novel appliance more clearly and the manner in which it is attachable to the front seats of the car.

Referring specifically to the drawing, a typical automobile of the enclosed type is shown-usually classed as a coach or coupe sedan-in which the backs 5 of the front seats are pivoted to the bases 6 thereof. These backs are usually tiltable forward, and for this purpose carry depending lugs similar to the lugs 7 shown upstanding from the seat bases 6 in Fig. 3. The sets of lugs are apertured and co-operate in overlapping pairs and with the use of bolts 8 and nuts 9 to pivotally attach the seat backs to the bases.

The construction above outlined is common, and nothing novel is of course claimed therefor. It furnishes, however, a practical basis on which to consider the conversion of the seating arrangement into a bed for travelling or camping purposes. To this end, the bases 6 of the front seat and the base 10 of the rear seat are connected by a pair of bridge plates 11, the backs 5 first and nuts 9. The front portions of the bridge plates 11 are intended to be attached to the seat bases 6, this being done by applying apertured lugs 12 struck down from the plates to the lugs 7 of the seat bases, the lugs 12 being arranged to co-operate with the lugs 7 and the same bolts and 'nuts, whereby a firm support is formed forthe front of the bridge plates 11. The rear ends of the latter simply rest on the seat base 10.

A continuous bed surface is thus furnished bythe rear seat base 10,bridgeplates 11 and front seat bases (3; and this surface may be readily supplemented or extended by depositing the front seat backso facedownupon the floor 13 and inclined fo0tboard 14 of the car directly in front of the front seat bases 6.

A full length bed is thus provided, which covered by a camping mattress or pad furnishes a. comfortable support. The bridge plates 11 may be made full or of open work to reduce weight. In either case, the material should be light, strong and preferably pressed in one piece.

It will be obvious that the appliance is capable of being installed or removed by persons of limited skill; and, the bridge plates when not used can be bundled into the mattress or simply laid on the floor, since they are thin and occupy a minimum amount of space. The device does not require any equipment altered or other radical changes made, and involves no expense to install.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new is The combination with an automobile front seat having a back removably hinged to brackets secured on the base of the seat,

of a fiat grid formed with depending lugs on one end thereof for engagement with said brackets when said seat back is removed, and means for hingedly securing said grid lugs to said brackets whereby the free end of said grid may be swung to rest on top of the rear seat of an automobile.
