Description

G. L. SHEPARD.
. Spring Bed-Bottom.

THE GRAPHIC CO.PHOTOrLlTH-39&41 PARK PLACE,N.Y-
UNITED STATES GEORGE L. SHEPARD,
OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,316, dated April 20, 1875; application filed March 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. SHEPARD, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Spring Bed-Bottom, of which the foL lowing is a specification:
My invention consists of the strips of metal forming the top, made of spring material, and bent down inside of the top of the volute springs, so as to afford relief by straightening out to some extent whenever a section is materially sprung down, and so avoid bending the side bars and springing down the other sections as much as they otherwise would be, and also to increase the elasticity of the bottom by the springing action which the strips thus bent aiford. My invention consists, also, of a simple and efiicient inode of connecting the strips so bent down within the volute springs to them by a ring laid in the bentdown portions, and secured by cross-pieces of wire passing over it and under the top coil of the spring, and fastened to the strips which pass over the top coil.
Figure 1 is a top view of a spring bed-bottom contrived according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 00 w.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the spring-metal strips, which 1 bend down, as shown at B, inside of the top of the volute springs O, whereon they rest, to obtain greater elasticity for the bottom, and to extend and contract lengthwise when much pressed down, to prevent drawing down the adjacent sections and bending in the side bars D. E represents the rings which I place in the depressions formed by so bending down the top strips, and F the wires by which I fasten them in. to secure the strips to springs O. The Wires pass over the rings, diagonally across the strips, under the top coil of springs, and coil around the strips, so as to be permanently fastened. Thus a broad and substantial connection is made to the large top coil in four points, and is firmly bound, so as to be very reliable, and at the same time it is simple and cheap.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The top strips A, made of elastic material, and bent down, as at B, in the top coils of the springs G, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, With the top strips A, bent down in the top coils of springs O, of the rings E and binding-wires F, substantially in the manner described.
GEORGE L. SHEPARD.
itnesses:
