INVENTUB ATTQBNEYS.
MARMADUKE H. MENDENHALL, OF WABASH, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIGHT-'PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,295, dated April 20, 1875; application led March 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARMADUKE H. MEN- DENHALL, ot' Wabash, in the county of Wabash and State ot' Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sight-Protector, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view ot my improved sight-protector, shown as arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective View ot' the same, the door being shown open.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This device is an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent No. 158,726 were granted to me January 12, 1875. rlhe lampcase is pivoted at the bottom to adapt it to rotate. It is also cut away on all sides,- and a hinged flap or plate swinging vertically, and a door swinging horizontally, are so combined with the case that when opened the lamp may be readily inserted or removed, or the light allowed to diffuse itself freely into the room 5 or the flap may be turned up while the door remains closed to allow the light to strike the ceiling and illumine the upper portion of the apartment, while the eyes of the persons reading or otherwise employed are shaded and protected.
A is the boX or case ofthe device, which is supported by i'our short legs, B,`the lower ends ot' which are attached to the four corners ot' the bottom C. The bottom (l rests upon a second bottom, D, to which it is pivoted by a screw, E, which passes through the center ofthe bottom G and screws into the center of the bottom D. This enables the device to be turned and adjusted as the convenience of those using it may require. To the front end ot' the case A is detachably and adjustably pivoted a deflector, F, by means ot' screw-knobs b', the shanks ot' which are inserted in notches c formed in the edges ofthe sides of the said case, as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 158,726. The space above the detlector F is closed by a hap, Gr, which is hinged at its upper edge, and its lower edge rests upon the said detlector F. To the rea-r end ofthe case A is attached a reflector, which is not shown in the drawings. The sides of the case A, opposite the bottom C, are cut away, and to the said sides, at the side edges of the said cut, are secured two pairs of vertical ilanges,
H and I, which are secured by screws screwed into their inner edges from the inside of the case A. This construction allows the pairs of flanges to be changed from one side ot' the case A to the other, when desired. The upper and lower ends ot' the flanges H I are beveled oft', and in the outer edges ot' the flanges H are formed notches h', to receive the stems ofthe screw-knobs J, that support and pivot the detlector K. One ot' the flanges I is made in two parts, which are hinged to each other, and to the outer one of which is hinged the door L, which, when closed, is fastened to the other flange I by a hook and staple, or other convenient fastening. The upper and lower ends of the flanges I are made exactly alike, so that they and the door L maybe attached, either end up. This allows the door L and the ilanges I to be attached to either side of the case A, and enables the door L to be turned back, to lie close against the rear end of the case A, from either side. To the inner side ofthe door L is attached a reflector, M, which may be adjusted to throw the light at any desired angle. To the sides ot' the case A, be-
tween the upper ends ot' the flanges H and I, are hinged the two tlaps N, the lower parts of which are beveled or inclined, so that they may lie closely upon the door L and deilector K. The flaps N may be turned up and held by hooks or other fastenings, when it is desired to throw the light through the room. By this construction, by turning up the lia-ps N, turning back the door L, and detaching the deiector K, the light may be thrown into the room.
Haring thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the second bottom D, and the pivoting-screw E, with the case A B C, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the case A B C, having its sides cut away or open at the bottom, of the tiap N, hinged near the top thereof, the door L, and hinged pieces I, all constructed and arranged as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
MARMAD UKE H. MENDENHALL.
