This invention relates to a safety window device. More particularlyit comprises a plate carrying an adjustable wedge block adapted to be interloclred inl various posi- 5 tions adjacent the window sash to prevent the elevation of a window beyond a precietermined amount. Y y
Devices of this character, as heretofore constructed, have, in many instances, lacked 1U sufhcient strength to afford the desired degree of security and have at times been uncertain in their operation.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of devices of this l5 character and to provide a window latch which may be applied to any window of standard construction Without cutting away any portion of the window or making any Isimilar changes therein. Other objects of the invention will appear in the course of the following description. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the device, the wedge block thereof being shown partly in section; Fig. 2 is the side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view taken along the line 3-3 shown in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 4 is the front elevation of a window with the device applied thereto.
As is clearly shown in the drawings, a plate 1, having a longitudinal slot 2 and aseries of ott-set notches 3 communicating therewith at spaced intervals is provided at its ends with screw holes 4 or other means for attaching it to the inside of one of the lateral members 5 of the upper window sash.
A wedge block 6 of slightly greater width u than the width of said longitudinal plate is o provided with a base plate 7 and depending ianges 8 adapted to contact with the upper surface of the longitudinal plate and engage over its side edges respectively. A *bolt 14 hav-ingl ain enlarged head 15 is provided, said headibeing adapted y to slidingly engage within said chamber and the body portion of said bolt to extend downwardly from the open end thereof. A collar 16 is fitted over the body portion of the bolt and screw `threadedly engaged within the outer end of said chamber. The outer end of the bolt is provided with a lrnurled head 17, whiclrmay be screw threadedly engaged thereon. The enlarged head of the bolt is provided with a screw threaded recess to receive the screw threaded end of the locking stud 18. Before assembling the parts in the chamber, as is shown in Fig. 3, a coil spring 19 is placed in the closed end of said chamber and the enlarged head of the bolt is pressed against the free end of said spring until the screw threaded aperture in said head lies beneath the lateral slot in the under face of the wedge block. The stud 18 is then screwed into place and the collar upon the stem of thebolt is screwed into the end of the chamber. The stud is provided at its outer end with a head or button 21 which is spaced from the inner surface of the wedge block a suflicient distance to engage behind the side edges of the slot in the longitudinal plate. In order to provide for the engagement of the wedge block with the plate, one end of the slot is provided with an enlargement 22 of a suflicient size to receive the head of the stud.
The operation of the device will be obvious from the construction above described. The strip is preferably applied. to the inside of one of the lateral members of the upper window sash. lf at any time one seeks to push the upper window down or the lower window up, the wedge block will come into action and will rigidly engage said parts and prevent any relative movement between the upper and lower sash. The wedge block may be positioned at any point along the places where a lateral notch is formed in the slot and it may be entirely detached from the plate by moving it to the end of the slot provided with the enlargement. l
The block being of heavy metal, is indestructible and the operative parts of the device are of simple character and easily assembled.
Other modes of applying the principle oi my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention l. A safety device for windows comprising a guide plate having an elevated central portion, a wedge block having lateral depending flanges engaging the sides of said plate and slidable longitudinally thereof, said plate having a longitudinal slot with notches provided at spaced intervals communicating therewith, and means on said wedge block for engaging said notches to hold said wedge block in any desired position of adjustment.
2. A safety device for windows comprising a guide plate provided with a longitudinal slot having lateral notches communicating therewith, a wedge block, a transverse chamber in said wedge block, a spring in said chamber, a headed bolt resting against said spring, an extensionon said bolt for engaging the slot and lateral l( notches `on said plate, and a collar for socuring said 'bolt within said chamber.
